Anyone else have this problem? You open a tin or jar, smoke a couple pipes with that blend, and then you want to change it up a bit with another blend. So you open a second tin and switch between the two for a while. Somehow a third blends enters the fold, and then a fourth. And then more..... yeah. I uh... have several blends going now. What can I say? I like variety. However, how do you stop yourself from unnecessarily opening too many only to have to waste more jars, in an effort to keep your tinned tobacco from drying out. I've long had this problem. I need discipline, my friends! Advise me, please.

There are “jars” and then there are canning jars where you took the time to remove the tin label with a heat gun and glue it on the new jar & lid to present well on the shelf. In the latter circumstance, I see no problem with as many “open” tins that have been properly jarred as your roving palate desires.

A unopened tin will likely never be enjoyed by the pipe smoker who purchased it. But a jar…IMG_3474.jpegIMG_2704.jpeg

At one point I had about 18 open. I'm now smoking through these open 18 jars and pledged myself that I will never, ever, ever do that again.

If I smoked through these 18 (now about 10 left) I will open 1 tin at a time. I'm working through these 10 jars one at a time. If the tin is larger than 50 grams the rest of the amount will go into a jar and will be smoked at another time.

In about 4 hours and 30 minutes I expect to be in my garage rummaging about various already opened bags or tins or jars for something to enjoy this afternoon, and rummaging about to select two or three pipes. I may rummage about in one of the spare bedrooms or in a couple tubs in the basement just because I may see something I've meant to try I've forgotten about, lol. I have favorites, and well stocked on those, but I jump around - I don't enjoy my pipes as often as most and like to experiment across a wide range.

Yeah, I have about 60+ jars/blends happening. I jump around a lot. Thankfully none have dried out since they stay shut for long periods of time.

This is roughly where I'm at for the same reason. And don't get me started about cigars.

Those days of multiple opened tins and jars are long gone. At most, I have three blends working at any one time, and I often just work my way through a tin before choosing a different one.

This is where I intend to be once I get through everything that I have opened.

You can add another person to the 60+ jars list! 😅

Eventually I'd like to reduce the hoard to just 5 or 6 blends though, so most weeks I pick one blend to smoke every day for that week and decide whether or not it's a keeper at the end of the week. Most aren't, but I have found a few blends I never expected to like but ended up really loving by just sitting with it and smoking it for a week. puffy

I have 36 jars on the go at any given time (started as 12... then 24... then 36...) I'm holding steady on not moving to 48.
My solution to this, as opposed to buying new jars, is when I tire of a blend and know I won't want to smoke it for a long while, is that I transfer it to mylar, seal it, and throw it in a box. Now I have just free'd up a jar to open a new tin.

My first few years, I had this problem also.
Now, I limit myself to just three or four blends open at a time. One all day smoke, one tasty smoke for after dinner smoking, and a strong blend for my nightcap. And, in the winter I will also keep a latakia blend about, and in the dead of summer I will keep a cigar blend open. I cannot pop a tin or jar until I have finished one.

I have 20 at the moment. I keep buying different tobaccos hoping that I will get that "Aha" blend that will make me forget the other jars in the pile. I envision me in 10 years with one jar of a daily blend and that's all. Of course, that vision is as likely to change as the weather. If the "next big thing" pops up, I may not even be smoking a pipe next year. Erratic I am in my interests.
