Today the mercury hit 107 in middle Missouri, likely the hottest since 1954.

My parents talked about how hot 1954 was all my life. I was born in 1958, and the hottest summer of my life was 1980.

I’m a sittin’ here a ruminating that the sales of premium pipe tobacco are almost certain to take a hit this summer.

I have to wait until way, way after dark to sit out here and smoke my pipes.

Yes, a few of us are blessed with air conditioned pipe friendly rooms and cars but not most of us.

How much less have you smoked a pipe during this heat wave?

It’s probably cut me back 80% on weekends and 40% on weekdays, just guessing.

When it is overly hot it probably cuts down my pipe smoking around 25%. I am blessed to live on the high desert of Oregon, so typically, even on hot days, it cools off to a large extent after about 7pm and does not get blazing hot until after 10am. This allows me to enjoy a morning smoke and a mid evening smoke without sweating a puddle down my back.

Having said all that, I will admit that next week we are expected to hit 107 for a daytime high. That will likely take away my after work smoke.

105 seems to be the Florida avg for these 3 months. Doesn’t affect me that much, can’t smoke in my apt only out back, there is a smoking lounge a couple miles but i don’t bother there is a 2 hour slot from 3-5 in the summer where the back porch is brutal even with a large shop fan so that’s my down time. In a couple months I’m moving and thankfully the new place screen in back porch faces east and lots of trees… can’t wait!

Monsoon season is here although it doesn’t impact the Coachella Valley that much. Here, we have learned to live the intensive heat. The roads don’t buckle and our air conditioning is a given. I can usually enjoy a pleasant time under the shade of my porch by the pool in the morning and late at night.image.jpg

I'm lucky enough to be able to smoke in my air-conditioned den, but if I had to smoke outside it would be a cigarette or a small bowl of 5 Brothers (same goes for the winter). I used to sit under my pavilion by my in-ground pool, but last May I filled the pool in because at 75yoa it got too much for me to take care of.

I ran around central Texas for 24 years, impervious to the raging heat, straddling a steaming 1.5 liter bike motor while watching the heat ripples distort my vision.

In the last few years, life has slowed me down quite a bit and I'm no longer 10 feet tall and bullet proof, so part of my move criteria was to have an indoor smoking space that I could use any time without upsetting the delicate balance with SWMBO.

I'm now a subterranean cavern dweller, happy in my new basement digs whilst my wonderful wife can paint and hang things all over the upper level as she wishes and we coexist in peace and harmony.

North Idaho has been pretty mild heat wise and it’s really dry so enjoying a pipe in the shade is no problem yet. What has been a problem the last few summers starting around August through September is all the dam wild fires making the sky all smoky and the air toxic hard to enjoy breathing let alone enjoying a smoke. I‘m sure all this will change drastically when we move to the southeast, toss up between Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi right now , we’ll see where we end up. Then I’ll be soaked in sweat I’m sure but this weather is too dry My wife is from Hawaii hers skin can’t take it and it’s not good for our kids skin either , back to the tropical climate for us…
