Tonquin has been used as a vanilla substitute so you can think about it along those lines. 1972 Flake and it's plug form Cob Plug are the primary examples using tonquin. It is a very traditional favoring agent in British blends as in licorice. I happen to like the stuff a lot but it can be a heady brew for the inexperienced.
