Drinking warm green tea while smoking will sometimes help a great deal with tongue bite and chemical burn. It can't cure everything--for example, I can't smoke Mac Baren Virginia #1 without bite, no matter how much tea I drink. But, in my experience, it does help. Drinking hot tea just makes thing worse for me.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I have been concentrating on my sipping techniques and have been limiting myself to 1-2 bowls per day (for now). I have been smoking stronger, more satisfying blends so 1-2 bowls get the job done. I envy you people with iron-clad mouths that can smoke bowl after bowl without effect!

Why am I so dumb?

What is worse for Chemical burn/high acidity/ tongue bite?

Viginias or Burley ? ....assuming you are packing/puffing & everything else correctly.

I get it every weekend when I am trying 45 recommended tobaccos ( Like em all)& hope it isn't one that I bought

Flyguy, I sympathize because my mouth is about ready to be written off after 2 bowls.
I occasionally get tongue bite, and I have seen glimpses of this "acid burn" but I hope it is not a permanent affliction.
Properly drying my blends before packing my pipe solved most of my smoking problem. I always used to do it a little bit, but most blends take longer than you'd think...
It is very rare for me to smoke straight from the tin but there are instances where I feel the tobacco is dry enough.
For the most part, though, that is one of the worst things you can do. As you mention, a hell of a lot of reviewers on TR and Youtube make this critical mistake and it colours their negative perception of a blend.

Yup, pipe smoking is a lot of work... tobacco preparation, tamping, smoking technique, cleaning, reaming... I love it :D

instymp, I am not a big burley guy, but the ones I have smoked have had no bite. If you dry the tobacco properly and smoke it slowly, none on my list will bite and none ever produce the acid burn for me.
I also never smoke without a glass of iced tea or iced coffee next to me. I also use Biotene between bowls which helps with dry mouth. I have found that va and vaper flakes do not dry my mouth anywhere near an aromatic. I have given up smoking aro's because of the dry mouth issue.

I use the Biotene also. It helps. I think having an iced drink helps also, especially after a relight.

I have read some pipe smoking articles that say pipe tobacco gives an alkaline burn and others say they give an acid burn. I have read that Virginias are more acid and burleys are alkaline. If I could get the definitive answer, I could balance out the PH with various tobaccos or drinks and solve part of my problem. Too many contradictions out there. For now I will need to make sure my tobacco is dry and that I smoke as slow as possible and be content. It is not like I am not enjoying pipe smoking, but I would like to enjoy it a whole lot more!
