I'm firmly convinced that The Lord of the Rings will go down in literary history as one of the greatest works of the 20th century.]
Thalking about great works, I would put Moby Dick (The Whale) in that category.

Definitely a Tolkien fan...first read The Hobbit and LOTR in my pre-teen years, and a couple more times since then. I thought Jackson did an overall great job with the LOTR trilogy (it helps if you allow that some of the material was extrapolated from the appendices)...but I was rather disappointed with the first Hobbit installment...way too over-the-top with some of the action sequences for one thing. I’m hoping parts 2 & 3 will be better.

I do enjoy his books quite a lot. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, while not pipe related, is wonderfully written.
The bad thing is, it reminded me of a shirt I saw a former student wearing.

Nobody at the school had called him on it. I was a bit surprised.

I arrived at Tolkien a lot later than most. I didn't get through Fellowship until the 3rd or 4th try but then powered through the rest of the series. I've read it twice now (including The Hobbit). Also did The Silmarillion and I am now working on the stuff edited but Christopher Tolkien (Book of Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales, etc.). Tolkien is not the reason I smoke pipes but he is the reason I purchased Capstan as soon as it was available and I was able to afford a TAD.

Yes a big fan. Read all of his books numerous times - except the silmarillion (only once) I don't have a clay pipe or a church warden. If i was going to find LOTR-esque pipe I would try and track one down by New Zealand pipe maker Jan Zeman who is sadly no longer making pipes. I really like the Thorrin pipe

I too am a big fan of Tolkien.
Delkhouri, that is a great quote by C.S. Lewis. I am a fan of Lewis as well.

If you like LOTR, you may also enjoy the Midkemia series by Raymond Feist. I love these books and the spin off series about the Empire.
