Not to beat a dead horse but the Hobbit movies gave a few of my kids impetus to read the books. And they noticed the differences but still like the movies for what they are. I have yet to watch a book based movie that does the book justice. Master and Commander is a farce compared to the books but taken by itself, not a bad movie. All about expectations. If it is entertaining without gratuitous violence/gore, ridiculous and moronic acting, and it has a decent script... It wins.

badkarma - I was diagnosed with Type II when I had back surgery in 1999 (didn't know I had it before then). When asked about smoking I told my doctor I smoked cigars 2 or 3 times a week and the same with pipes. He asked if I smoked cigarettes and I told him I've never smoked them. He once told me that smoking pipes didn't count as far as he was concerned.

pappymac, I've found that almost all Dr.s I've talked to take the total blanket stance. I spoke with an old elderly country Dr. from here in the Ozarks and he told me, "There's a reason why they all call it practicing medicine."
I think I'm taking a all things in moderation stance for now.

As to the movies. I'm 54 years old and have read all of Tolkiens books. I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit almost every year since I was 14. I was disappointed that everything in the books was not on the screen, but then I realized that we would still be waiting on the 9th movie in the Trilogy and still no Hobbit movie. I love the books and I love the movies. I take them for exactly what they are. No one could have done a better job.

My family created a tradition to watch the LoTR movies sans the hobbit movies at least once a year now. Keeping us together via a movie trilogy.
The Silmarillion was an amazing book, my favorite of Tolkien's stuff!

How about studying up on what the Tolkien blends have and mixing up your own special version? Since the novels are so endlessly creative and original, that might be in the best 'Rings spirit. You could use exactly what they don't, as another riff on the trilogy. Pick out a character and make a blend to capture his or her essence, on your terms.

I really like STM. Ruins of Isengard is not bad either. I enjoy latikia aromatics. I put Sillems Black and Shortcut to Mushrooms in the same boat.

If you are a Tolkien fan, I think the man himself liked Three Nuns and Capstan. Of course the formula for Three Nuns has changed since he smoked it.
Lore has it that he went through lots of tins of Capstan Blue.

For the record, in my view the LOTR movies are great -- the editor Tolkien always needed -- but The Hobbit series seemed simplistic and hasty. Read the books first for full effect. Read Beowulf and the Kalevala before reading the books for even fuller effect. Helps to be familiar with The Odyssey and The Aeneid. The Eddas might be useful as well.
Might also want to poke into this and this.
