Howdy!
I've been eyeballing some Tolkien inspired tobacco recently, and I was wondering if anyone has tried these!

I'm, personally, in love with all things LoTR or Tolkien related. Was contemplating purchasing the sampler due to it not being horrifically expensive!

By all means you should try them if it makes you feel like a Hobbit. I haven't, because I'm a curmudgeon who knows when someone is using a gimmick to try and reel me in to sell me something. But don't let that stop you. Read up on them at TobaccoReviews.com ... There are good things said there.

I'm a big fan of the tobaccos at JFH! I have yet to see the LOTR movies though. My favorites from them are Shortcut to Mushrooms, Ruins of Isengard. Another favorite of mine, although it's not part of the Middle Earth series, is Whiskey Biscuit Gravy. These are all kind of cross over tobacco blends that are mild aromatics with some Latakia in the mix, a little like McClelland's Frog Morton series. If the descriptions sound good to you, I highly recommend these blends.

I've tried Shortcut to Mushrooms and it's good... just not as good as people rave about. The Frog Morton blends are definitely superior IMHO. There's also no mushroom flavor, though that doesn't stop people from tasting it!
McClelland also has Tolkien-inspired line, The Craftsbury series, which includes the Frogs.

If you are a Tolkien fan, I think the man himself liked Three Nuns and Capstan. Of course the formula for Three Nuns has changed since he smoked it.

I find that fascinating! All it is, it a vanilla Cavendish with some Latakia thrown in. My father in law's favorite smoke was Captain Black with some Latakia in it. I thought it was so so when I first started smoking.... Later on when I tried Shortcut To Mushrooms I was reminded of it as it's basically the same idea, a vanilla Lat.

The sampler blend pack is a great way give them a try. And fairly cheap.

Ruins of Isengard, shortcut to mushrooms, and Old Toby are all good blends. I think they are fun to try as a Lord of the Rings fan.

I have not tried those tobacccs but finally got around to trying Capstan. Great stuff. When I think of Tolkien and smoking I think of Capstan. Frog Morton by McClelland was named from Middle Earth so there is another tobacco theme to follow. Then there is the specialized cobs... and the Vauen churchwardens. I have none of these but share a hobbits appreciation for fine pipe weed on a warm afternoon.
And yes another Tolkien Fan here. I just moved my book collection from to a new shelf we have set up in our living room.

Fmegee very cool shelf, I still haven't made it through the silmarillion yet..

the specialized cobs and the Vauen churchwardens

I have one of the Vauen Auenland churchwardens and i really love it. And the cobbit series of missouri meerschaum cobs are really cool for the price as well.

As another LOTR fan I bought both the Shire and the Wizard Cobbits from MM. Also enjoy a few of the Frog Morton series and always keep a few tins of Capstan around. Always nice to have a pipe at hand when re-reading Tolkien.

I've been a Tolkien fan since I was a child, but have still not tried any of those blends. People rave about them though, so I say try them. Though I've not tried any of those blends, I do have one of my own named Oakenshield after Thorin Oakenshield of the Hobbit.

Anthony, can you give us more details on Oakenshield? I am keen to know what you may have put in it.

Certainly. It's basically rum soaked black cavendish, Red Virginia, Cavendish, Izmir, and Latakia with just a touch of cherry and vanilla flavoring.

Somehow I am not surprised that Oakenshield is partial to cherry!

Can't recommend the Jackson films as lotr movies. They are fun action films. Jackson took too much liberty with the plot and characters, pulling a bait and switch with cinematography and effects. The hobbit films were so bad I stopped after the first one. I have to wait years til I can disassociate them from Tolkien before I can enjoy these Jackson action films.

The movie can never be as good as your imagination makes the books, and can never have the details included in the books. I took the Jackson ones with a grain of salt and enjoyed them, but the Hobbit was so far off from the actual plot it was crazy.
I have the Vauen Gilg smooth pipe and it smokes like a dream. I really enjoy it. Check out this necrothread with LOTR Vauen pipes.

Hi all. First post. I started smoking a pipe many years ago, but stopped because I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and was advised by my Dr. But I have since not found any evidence of all the claims made about pipes and health, but thats for another thread. I live a little South of Just For Him and have been in there many times and those guys are a class act. The Tolkien series was one of my favorites. When I quit smoking, I threw out all of my cigars, but could no bring myself to do that with my pipes and tobacco. I had several large canisters of Shortcut to Mushrooms and Old Toby.
Fast forward 10 years. I had totally forgotten about those canisters and pipes. I was looking for a large chili pot and stumbled across these. I popped the top on the StM and about fell over!! What an amazing experience!!! 10 years really did justice to this blend. That sparked the research into pipes and health. And my conclusion? I'm baaaaackk!!!!!

Ooo okay! I may be willing to wait the 10 years...
As someone who detests movies,
I just saw this! Why do you detest them? I'm on the opposite corner of being in love with the movies!
