Great post OP. I was wondering the same thing, and is why I cam here to visit tonight. I am just beginning to acquire tobacco in bulk, got a few mason jars, and quickly realized, there must be a difference in jarring them for short term use, vs. long term aging. As I continue to explore new tobaccos.....I keep buying 8-16 oz of my favorites, jarring it (in one large jar).......BUT, then am constantly opening that jar to load my day pouch, load a bowl, (and sometimes......even to just have a wiff :) (I know I shouldn't do that :)
I smoke about 2 oz per week (8 oz per month). So 8 or 16 oz of anything really doesn't last me all that long. (does not get a chance to age)
But then I read more about aging......seems some say aging does not occur in a vacuum, and air is needed (so I am still aging my tobacco even when I occasionally open the jar ??) Is this correct ????
I read elsewhere, that the second you open the tin, then you have stopped the aging process.
This leads me to another question tho.......if the theory of the second you open the tin, then you have stopped the aging process is true.......then by definition......any one who is storing tobacco in a Mason Jar.....has already stopped the aging process.......have they not ? Because the tobacco has already been exposed to air.... ??? (....and if you purchased a bulk tobacco delivered in a plastic bag.....then by definition of certain theory.......that aging process has already stopped as well). .....even if you then jar it.....??
I am beginning to think I am better off getting a bunch of small mason jars, vs the large ones, and split my 8oz/16oz monthly purchase into several small stashes vs, so that while I am constantly opening one for my daily use.......I can let the others age........but as you can probably tell I am (to quote my favorite band) - Dazed and Confused.
