what size jars are best? I know jar sizes are measured in liquid measurements, how I would I find out how much tobacco would they hold? ( curious since I want to buy the jars online)

I use a mix of 500ml and 250ml jars myself, keep 2oz in the 500ml jars, 1oz in the 250ml.
Would suggest buying wide mouth as opposed to standard mouth too; facilitates initial filling, and also "decanting" (can load your pipe over the jar).

Adams glass peanut butter jars (well washed out) with an extra rubber O-ring in the lid. I've used this for the last 4 years with great success.

If you get into the mason jar thing, you'd be wise to invest ( just over $1) in a canning funnel...it really makes the transfer from plastic bags and tubs much easier.... :puffy:

Two bits of advice you should not overlook are:
  • (1) use wide mouth jars per schmitzbitz, and

    (2) get a canning funnel as hilojohnny suggested.
I prefer half-pint jars so you can smoke from one while the others, if any, age. They'll hold 3 oz. or more depending on the tobacco cut and how hard you want to pack it. Some air is good for aging, so don't use a kitchen vacuum appliance.

Sorry for the thread bump, but I have a question. I have read a bunch of threads and articles about tobacco storage, but they never really talk about one thing: how does routinely opening mason jars affect tobacco?
I ask because I love trying new blends, so I have quite a few blends jarred. I also dip into them for a bowl quite regularly (sometimes twice per week, sometimes once per fortnight). Am I "harming" the tobacco in any way by exposing it to fresh air once in a while? I should add that it may take me a year or two to even finish one 50g tin at this rate!

I've got 4 ounces of Shortcut to Mushrooms that I've been dipping into every so often for the past 8 months, and it's still fine. Tastes just like it did when I first got it. If you're really trying to age your tobacco hardcore, like say, keeping it in a jar for 5-10 years, it might dry out eventually if you keep doing that, and if thats the case you might want to leave it sealed, but if its something that you are only going to have around for a few months, I'd say you're just fine.

Nah, it's not anything I'm trying to purposefully age. I just realize that the more tins I open the longer it will take me to finish them (perhaps even a year or two) since I'm only a bowl-a-day smoker, and so I was worried about ruining them.
Thanks for the feedback!

If you're "aging" the tobacco, It shouldn't be opened since it halts the process, but if you're just storing them and you need to grab a bowl, no harm. I have about 40 jars none are being used for aging and aI grab a bowl here nad there and haven't noticed any difference in the tobacco
