I recently bought a pouch of tobacco 'Holland House' and although its a fair smoke, its not something that I want to be enjoying on a regular basis.

To cut to the chase so to speak, in terms of short term (3 or 4 months) storage would I be better off keeping the tobacco in a zip lock bag or in a jam jar?

I just found 8-8oz Ball jars for $.25 a piece at Target. They were part of a dozen or so that had been removed from their packages and didn't have a price. A manager cut me a deal, and I couldn't be more pleased. They are the perfect size for a 2oz or 50gr package of tobacco.

Agreed, JAR IT!! I have cases of various sized 'mason/ball' jars, and as soon as I open a tin, get a bulk shipment..etc..it goes into a jar. I haven't smoked my pipes in approx. 2 years, and I'm rocking some seriously nice tobaccy! I have to let my flakes sit out enough to get a good rub out! JAR 'em man!!

That's a terrific stash Bubba, :clap: and the half-pint jars allow most of a purchase to continue to age while you're smoking from one jar of the blend. Why not have a bunch of tobacco on hand? Barring some catastrophe, it won't spoil, and you don't have to feed it! :lol: Great strategy for aging, and hedging against inflation and tax increases. :wink:

Everyone else already said it! You can find some gal. sized rubber ringed hinge lock jars for 3-4$ at Dollar General Walmart has some great glass sqaure storage jars in a variety of sizes for great prices as well. I have some of them all and they work great!

Well as your UK based I'd recommend Ikea. I got some jars from them the other day for 95p each.

They are bug enough to hold 50g of tobacco and are the rubber seal hinge type jars
Hold my baccy nicely and v cheap too :)

I've got some of my bulks in bail-top jars from Walmart. All my opened tins that I plan on aging were emptied into small decorative Mason jars. I don't have too many at the moment so it's easy to keep track.
I still have one aromatic - McClelland Tastemaster - in its tin that's been open for a few weeks; still too damp to smoke for my liking, so I'm not overly concerned with it drying out. If the casing fades prematurely I guess I've just got something to blend into my other tobaccos.
I also got enough for a few pipefuls left in 3 different ziploc bags, though I'm sure it will be fine for the time it will take me to smoke. I'd rather leave that tobacco sitting in the baggie than constantly open my jars and disturbing the contents.
As far as PG soaked blends go, I've smoked Captain Black White/Sail Green/Amphora Full Aroma straight from the pouch six months after they were opened and their texture and moisture level was finally where I could enjoy a dry enjoyable smoke. A nice bit of the flavour was gone but there were no other issues; a general sweetness remained and you could identify the tastes still, they were just subtler.

An alternative to jars is to rub some candle or bee's wax on the rim of a pop-top style tin,

and press some aluminum foil in place. Then snap the plastic cover back over the tin.

That'll keep the tobacco OK for several months.

@wolfscout,

I make circular labels with a computer drawing program, cut them out, and use double sided scotch tape

to secure them to the jar lids. Sticky-backed label sheets work well too.
