(always exceptions some confidence is earned, but even then there is some doubt).
Just reread this and realized this last statement could be taken from two perspectives. Either the confident person still has doubts (which is what I meant) but it also could be that even when you see someone who seems to have earned their confidence it's not a bad idea to have some doubts. Both apply.
Sorry at heart I am and always will be a bit of a nerd.

When I was a kid, you could go to a newstand and buy a 5 or 10 cent Topstone, Muniemaker, or FD Graves right from the open box on the counter that came right from the factory the day before ... always fresh. No more. I
So many American cities used to local budget cigar brands, now I think pretty much only Dutch Masters, White Owl, and Phillies are still around and they're mostly used for blunts. Arturo Fuente, La Palina, and JC Newman are still around but they've long since switched to a premium product.

Topstone, Muniemaker, FDGraves were all locally rolled back then. Topper Corona Grande was one of the best tasting cigars made IMHO, hand made, Dominican short filler, cameroon wrapper and ct broadleaf wrapper over that. Sweet rich and tasty. As good as a Fuente IMHO.

Yeah like how New Zealand scrapped their generational tobacco ban after they realized it would result in massive loss of tax revenue, not because they thought maybe it was overreach and they shouldn't dictate how adults live their lives
From my perspective, this is not actually what happened. Rather the forecasted costs associated with rolling out the new legislation were the lowest hanging fruit to fund the billion dollar landlord tax-cuts campaign promises of the new coalition government.

Tobacco is already so over taxed and socially irrelevant that it is a surprise to see someone smoking in NZ. The real tragedy (again from my perspective) was the deliberate introduction of an unregulated Vape industry. Now that there are more people vaping than there were tobacco users, things are firming up and excise tax is beginning to be applied to vapes. It’s almost as if we had to wait until the next generation was throughly addicted to a new taxable commodity before getting rid of the old one.

I’m currently ashamed of my country and the stuff happening in parliament - not tobacco related at all.

Kiwi rant over. I’m going to smoke a bowl

Thanks for clarifying, regardless money was still the concern and not overreach. There's a Kiwi on here who quit buying tobacco years ago and grows and cures his own because it's cheaper that way. Of course that's not an option for most people.

The most bizarre thing about tobacco taxation in NZ is that our climate is perfect for growing and curing tobacco. Even when we had a tobacco belt (up until 1980s) there were still rules in place saying that domestically manufactured tobacco could only use something like 10% of locally sourced tobacco - in order to maintain the import tax revenue stream.

Tobacco grows wonderfully in a ton of regions all over the world, sadly government interference prevents it from being a viable industry in most of them
