I'm looking for pipe tobacco recommendations that are similar to what I'm enjoying at the moment.

I smoke Morley's Best the most (a couple of bowls every day). I also enjoy Five Brothers and Ryback.

I recently got some Billy Budd and smoke it about once a week.

What other tobacco blends would you recommend that are similar or tangential to these blends?

Thanks in advance!

You and I may be smoking brothers, as the blends you like and smoke regularly are also among my favorites!

I would recommend trying Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Dark (or Dark Birds Eye or Kendal Kentucky, they are supposed to be all the same blend). It will be reminiscent of D&R Ryback, with the strength of Five Brothers though primarily they are dark fired Virginias. Stout and full-flavored, with a very thin (almost shag) cut.

In the vein of Morley’s Best, get you some Old Joe Krantz Red Label, which has burley and Latakia with a touch of unflavored cavendish - or even the standard Old Joe Krantz, which is burley and perique but no Latakia.

I might add C&D Pegasus, which is basically Morley's Best with unsweetened black Cavendish standing in for the latakia.

And if you're open to a home blend, I have really enjoyed "Miller's Mulch," a custom blend created for a UW Madison professor by the folks at the now-defunct Tobacco Bar in Madison. It's a pretty simple but delicious recipe that burns well and can be tweaked to your preference:

Miller's Mulch
5.5oz (68.75%) Cube Cut Burley (C&D or Peter Stokkebye 41)
1.5oz (18.75%) Lane BCA (or any vanilla black Cavendish; I've used Peter Stokkebye #201)
1oz (12.5%) Latakia

Blend and let rest sealed in a jar for a month, then smoke to your heart's content.

Thank you all for the recommendations!

Now I need to locate the blends you mentioned.

I did have Dark Bird's Eye before and liked it. I think it was sold out the last time I checked, but that was a while ago.

Thanks again!

Thanks.

I'm familiar with the Tobacco Reviews site and plan to look up the blends that have been recommended there.

As you suggest, I'll also look up tobaccos I already know to see if I can find a reviewer who syncs up with my tastes and take it from there. Great tip!

I dont do Latakia, but I gotta admit I’m very curious about what PS 41 Cube Cut would taste like with a bit of Lat

Remember when Booksamillion had a website that would recommend books that were similar under every book or music that they would sell? Amazon tries to do that, but theirs has always sucked.
Anyways, it would be cool if SPc did that. “If you liked Escudo, you should try smoking Bullseye Flake, Bayou Morning Flake, or wet cardboard, etc…”

I added a laugh reply thanks to that last bit, but this is actually a lovely idea; it could be even better if the more experienced TR reviewers were to include some "similar to" suggestions in their reviews, since if I learn that a particular reviewer's palate is similar to mine, their suggestions could hold greater weight that I may enjoy them as well.

SP does have a recommended tobaccos list on their home page, but it's based on what you've bought in the past, not what you liked. It would indeed be great if Tobacco Reviews could add a recommended function, but I suspect it would be a fair bit of work and $$ to implement.

I'll second the C&D Pegasus.
Maybe the most underrated blend in history.....in my opinion. :)
I don’t know. Pegasus is great, love it, but it’s recommended a lot on here. Kelly’s Coin however… I think I may be the only one smoking it, ha ha. It’s on my low side of strong, for me, but very tasty. Jeremy recommended it to me, when I asked for another uncased burly… besides the usually talked about ones.

Thats why I said, "in my opinion". ;)
This is the only place I ever hear about it. It has been catching on the last couple years, but stayed on the fringe for years before.
On a video somewhere Jeremy Reeves says he has no idea why Pegasus finally hit its stride the last year or two. He said its always been a great sleeper blend.

So I finally got some Pegasus and Dark Bird's Eye.

I already knew I liked the Bird's Eye so I'm glad I got more.

The Pegasus recommendations were spot on! This stuff is great! I'm smoking a bowl right now. The aroma is delightful, as is the taste!

I'll be trying some of the other blends mentioned when I order again in a month or two.

Thanks for your help!
