i find a moist smoke more flavorful then dry, a newly opened tin is better then one that ive had for a few weeks. some relighting but i dont worry about that to much.

While I prefer my tobacco to be as dry as possible, we each find our own personal preference.....

if my tobacco dries a little to much i just put a quarter slice of an apple in with the tobacco and it moistens it right up in a day or so.

Chero: I can tell by your pic you're from the same generation I am and you, like me, probably heard about the apple slice thing years ago. It sounds quaint, but it really isn't a good idea to put "rotting fruit" in your tobacco. :x Just a litte spritz of water will do nicely.

used that apple slice for years, a good solid apple not a rotten one.

ate a many of half rotten one in my day too.
use a slice of FRESH APPLE in your tobacco for a nice apple scent and to releave dryness.

Ok, I should have explained. As soon as you put the fresh apple slice in the tobacco it starts to decompose (rot). All that sugar combined with a dark, moist environment is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This bacteria can transfer to the tobacco you're going to smoke, which ain't good.
Bottom line... suit your self.

i raised tobacco as a cash crop for years and do you know what you are smokeing in that pipe? i do and i don't worry about a apple, thats my last worry.

I like mine on the dry side..never raised tobacco the family used to own an allotment Chero. love smelling the barns this time of year though. I'll keep the apple trick in mind if needed..always have a few around.

@ searock --

Chero does have a point; a little bit of apple rot is the very least of your worries. Let's face it--inhaling something that's on fire is not good for living organisms, as a rule. We're all adults and have made our informed decisions in that regard, thankfully without the help of any legislation. :)
@ Chero --

Searock does have a point, as well. As an alternative, the rind of citrus fruits like orange, lime, and lemon can impart moisture and delay rapid bacterial growth because of the acidity.
Or you can spritz.
I tend to like mine on the moist side, personally. I'm still learning why though.
