Tobacco Knife (My Grandpa’s Old Case XX)

I have been looking for a dedicated knife to cut plug tobacco. I tried to use my NRA knife but it has a China blade (I know, the irony, right?) it’s garbage and not able to take a good edge. I got to thinking, then remembered that I had a few of my Grandpa’s old knifes. They were all in bad shape. This one had some rust and a lot of grime (didn’t get a good before pic) I was able to get it cleaned up and sharpened. Its sharp enough to shave with. It has a full flat grind that is ideal for slicing thin cuts off of the plug. I think it cleaned up nice. Not sure how old it is. What do you guys use.

It’s a bit big for an EDC for me but works perfect for this. Plus I can still use it without the risk of beating it up. I have a lot of my Grandparents (both sides of the family) things and love them. Because they have all passed it’s nice to preserve them.

I don't have anything fancy I use an Opinel No6 and an Opinet No8, they get the job done.

I got a Case lockback at the time my daughter was born and managed to lose it after 40 years. Of course, they don't make that model anymore, so I had to get one from Ebay. Shortly after that, I spotted another one that was NOS so I got that as well.

I gave one to my daughter to use when she's working on her farm. It's amazing how much that daddy/daughter connection mattered to her. Sometimes a little tradition like that carries a lot of emotion with it.

That did clean up nicely! I use either one of these, a Schrade Walden that belonged to my great uncle, with a 1957 "safety award" etched flat grind pull blade, or the Buck 301 clip that came with a vehicle I purchased.

Strange. I've never smoked or cut plugs, but wouldn't a blade with more belly work more effectively? (Just curiosity; I have no intention of making my pipe smoking more of a p.i.a. than it already is.)

I too use a Case pocketknife with a sheepsfoot blade for cutting plugs. Does a fine job of the task.

Ya I would have preferred a straight edge instead of a drop point but this one works great.
