I trust glass and metal. Plastic, less so, especially in warm climates. But, when I used to smoke drugstore tobacco like Blender's Gold Golden Burley, I kept it in the bag it came in. Of course, those bags did not last terribly long.

Of course there are bags and then there are bags. Tobacco put into 5mm metallized Mylar ziplock bags and then heat sealed will not dry out. Not six months from now and not five years from now. They are completely opaque and gas/moisture tight, period, and this is going to be the case with any sane indoor storage situation. They are physically tough as well. Short of physically assaulting them with an icepick they are going to remain intact for a long long time. On top of all that they are food safe. This type of bag is meant for the prepper trade where storage requirements are measured in decades. There is essentially zero downside to using them. Last but not least these bags do not outgas in any way detrimental to health.

I was watching Stuff&Things channel being the new smoker I am. I went out to AC Moore and bought twist top Mason jars and put all my tobacco in those. They were on sale for $1 each so I bought a bunch. I now have each tin decanted into its own jar and properly sharpied as to the date and name. (I save my tins because I like the artwork lol).

OXYGEN ABSORBERS?
I read that folks storing food in glass or mylar put an oxygen absorber in each packet. This might be great for long term storage, but would removing the oxygen hinder the tobacco ageing process?

I have used Ziplock bags with no bad results, but dont go cheap use brand name freezer bags, the cheap thin ones are not worth it

The oxy absorbers are only needed for dry bulk foodstuffs. Not necessary and not desirable for tobacco and could well hinder aging.

what is bad about storing pipe tobacco in a ziploc bag if that's how it came?
Because those bags are gas-permeable. Like Jeff said--- if you can smell the stuff, that is why. They are shipped that way because it is cheap and easy. If you double up on the extra-heavy bags, that only slows the process. Glass and metal are the least permeable, so for long term storage . . .

My bulk tobacco comes in ziploc bags, I put the whole thing in wide mouth mason jars, I've had a couple blends for 12 years like that and they stay moist
