I can't say for sure, but when I looked at some Irish pipe tobacco shops I found a very poor selection, and very high prices which is a shame as Ireland was supposed to have some great pipe tobacco, especially plugs :(

What I can see from google is this shop, with a really limited range: Pipe Tobacco - https://jamesfox.ie/collections/pipe-tobacco
And this which looks much better, in Belfast - but note Belfast is in the UK, not the Republic of Ireland: Pipe Tobacco Archives - Miss Morans - https://missmoran.co.uk/product-category/pipe-tobacco/

Perhaps an Irish member can chime in.

I always want Gauloises ( French Tobacco) and MacBarren sells Scanferlati Caporal over there. If you can find it it’s an experience for sure but probably up North on the UK hemisphere of the island seems the Brit’s like the dark French stuff…

Samuel Gawith - Best Brown Plug - The flake is exported to the US, but not the plug, and the plug is excellent and ages a bit differently from the flake.

Germain's - Rich Dark Flake - A kissing cousin to Stonehaven that's available in bulk pack.

Samuel Gawith - St James Plug - Same story, the flake is exported to the US, but not the plug, and it ages very well.

Choice here isn't great and prices are high. It's cheaper to book an overnight to Spain or cologne and stock up there than buy here. You even get the local tobaccos at about half price or under there due to taxes.

That said you'll be able to get condor here quite easy ready rubbed or plug can be had quite easily in a lot of grocery stores.

No we don't. The only place I've seen 'Caporal' is in France or Belgium.
From Ireland I'd go with yachtsmans plug & condor long cut.

Where in Ireland is your friend going? I've been to Ireland a handful of times and will be traveling there at the end of the summer. I always look for tobaccos that are hard to find for us in the states when I'm there and frankly, I'm usually underwhelmed by the the offerings. It's my experience that you may find Yachtsman and Condor plugs, Maltan, Special Virginia, as well as various Peterson tins at newsagents but you have to ask the counter person if they have pipe tobacco available as it's not out in the open. On my last trip there 3 years ago I visited M. Cahill & Son, a tobacconist in Limerick, and was disappointed to learn that, due to EU regulations, they were no longer allowed to sell loose tobacco and didn't have any of their house blends for sale. They did have some Peterson tobacco in stock but the price per tin was roughly three times higher than the average price here. The very lovely woman working at the time told me that if I was looking for tobacco blends by other manufacturers (I asked about GH in particular) she said I'd have to travel to Belfast. This all being said, I did visit Galway on the same trip where I happened to pop into P. Powell and Sons, a music shop, where to my surprise I found pouches of Velvan and Mick McQuaid plugs.

I’ve only been over the pond a handful of times , That’s why “seems” The musicians I was hanging with smoked dark RYO think ”drum“ “ Bali shag” I was smoking Gauloises and some stuff I found in Germany that was a lot like it but even darker if you can imagine. What is in that stuff? It’s so distinctive.

I can't say there was any latakia in the Gauloises I smoked (bought in the US). I'm more certain it had floor sweepings from a particularly dirty bird cage or the like!
Lol whatever it was it was stoved very black and I guess they stopped making the good stuff a long time ago the law is all smokes have to have low nicotine now er something. Weird that in my lifetime something so world iconic and renown is just straight up canceled. Imagine Lucky strikes just being gone or reduced to a shadow of itself. You apparently can’t stand them but if they made a pipe form it would be my desert island blend ?
