Hello all, first post on this forum. I've been smoking the same couple of tobaccos for 5-6 years. I like cherry and vanilla flavours but like many started smoking a pipe as I wanted to be like my dad and grandfather and recreate the aroma that their pipes had. Sadly I lost both just prior to taking up pipe smoking so never got to ask their brands. Looking for good aromatics or good classics that will create that lovely aroma I remember or something new I might enjoy. I've managed to find similar with special Virginia but wondering if anyone has some good suggestions. Looking forward to hearing from you. All the best and happy smoking.

Welcome! Ray47 beat me to it with the Vanilla Cream recommendation. MacBaren also has Original Choice and 7 Seas Royal, which also have hints of vanilla. Can't help with the cherry, never been much into it, but based on my experience with Sillem's blends, their Sillem's Red should be alright (I've only tried Blue and Black). There's also Sweet Vanilla Honey Dew from Dan Tobacco.

I don’t think you can experience the room note you remember from when your dad and grandfather smoked their pipes. At least in my caseI can’t experience the room note when I smoke.
I know which tin notes I like, same with the flavors when I smoke. But I only experience room note when I’m at pipe club meetings.
I never know what the room note is like when I’m smoking alone. That means room note is a minor consideration when I’m looking for a new blend.

If your grandfather was anything like my great grandfather, then I would say check out half and half, Prince Albert and Carter hall. In my experience, one of those 3 should atleast be similar to something most of the old timers smoked.
Personally I Never saw my great grandfather without a 8oz tub of half and half next to his chiar, a glass of whiskey next to it and a pipe in his mouth. Even at 110 (he lived to 112, but the last few years were downhill fast ) he made loading and lighting a pipe seem so effortless. I honestly wish I knew what happened to his pipes after he passed on (I was 9) I would absolutely love to own one of them now.

The aroma in the room when my Grandfather smoked his pipe was the reason I started smoking a pipe many many years ago. While I enjoy a number of different blends, I haven’t strayed very far from the aromatics that got me going on the journey.
I’d suggest the classic Lane bulk tobaccos - RLP-6 (vanilla), LL-7 (Vanilla & caramel), MV-1000 (vanilla), and TK-6 (cherry). These bulks are a fairly inexpensive way to help you with your search of the type of blend you seek. Your mentioning “special Virginia” suggests you may not be in the US & if that’s the case I think retailers like 4noggins.com & smokingpipes.com ship internationally. For me another must-try is Trout Stream.

Sutliff's Molto Dolce has the most grandpa-esque room note I've smelled. However, they sure as hell weren't smoking that. I'd give Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic a shot as well. Cheap, fairly respected, and been around forever, could be the one.

I like to smoke codger blends like CH, PA when I want something in my cob pipe that I don't have to think about to much.
I find them to be forgiving blends that don't require a lot of attention.
My grandfather smoked a 50/50 blend of PA and Middleton's Cherry blend and I loved the aroma as a kid.
I tried it a while back and wasn't impressed with it, I thought it was just a good way to ruin perfectly good PA.

Try them ALL, a new one every chance you get. From Codger blends to limited special releases. Life is too short not to continually enjoy all of the amazing blends out there.
