We seen a massive spike in cancers around the time cigarettes took the place of pipes and cigars
Referring back to the OP. It was the turn of the century when science really brought medicine out of the dark ages of hacking off limbs and leaches. This also was the time of the popularization of cigarettes. The correlation of the rise in cancer and cigarettes is linked. However, keep in mind that many people died before the 1900's of cancer, but it was written off as an act of God or some other bit of quackery.
People do die from pipes. My best friend's dad, a pipe guy, went to the dentist a few years back, and the dentist saw a "something" in his mouth and two weeks later he was dead. Let's not kid ourselves, there is a risk. I like to think the risk is much less than idiotically inhaling smoke directly into my lungs, but I am getting some into my lungs by being in a room with it, I am inflicting it on everyone. But, there are other things that are just as bad in my environment. Heck, the radiation from my computer monitor...
It is completely wrong to think that there is any "safe" use of the drug, nicotine. However, I think it is not as "evil" as the anti's make it out to be either. But, anyone who thinks that it is completely safe is just kidding themselves and not doing anyone any good.
However, my car gives off way more poison than my pipe.
Just keep everything in perspective.
