Trying to avoid politics to the best of my ability here, but the relationship between insureds and insurers has really changed for the positive. What we have now mandated is that everybody in our (USA) society gets to partake in the risk sharing, even with pre-existing conditions. Before the insurance companies basically had the discretion to keep the pool as clean as possible, so to speak, to mitigate risk. No more. This, I see as a benefit. Those who complain about premiums are usually insurance loss leaders in this regard, anyway, and don't even really realize it.

Not to interrupt the political crap, but for those interested in actual facts, these days most employers serious about screening for smokers specify a cotinene test. It stays in the body much longer.
