When did tins suddenly become an unreliable method of storing/cellaring tobacco? I've read a few isolated instances about problems but it seems like by and large, tins will survive well past 10 years. I've bought some 5 gallon mylar bags just in case and will be filling them up with tins I want to put away for 10 years plus. A little belt with suspenders anal retentive behavior. But I'm certainly not going to empty those tins out and fill up mason jars.

I guess I'm very fortunate to have a heated/air conditioned man cave. If I didn't, I would purchase one of those miniature barns from Lowes, park it in the back yard and run power to it.

<p>Despite any perceived risk, a 10+ year-old original sealed tin will have a far better resale value than the home jarred equivalent. For investment purposes, even if you did lose a small percentage to seal failure your greatly increased profit margen would surely make up for the losses.

I've had a single tin fail, it was a tin of Sam's FVF and oddly it was less than 12 months old when it failed.

Not everything in tins is offered in bulk. And as mentioned above tins are way more valuable if you decide to sell.

This is a subject I know nearly nothing about, However I will pipe in (maybe small pun intended)that back in the day when I used to smoke roll ups I have had more than one square tin failure on bulk tobacco I brought and ever since then have been cautious about storing or for that matter buying them.
