I've found that anything with Latakia, or the perfumed Lakeland blends, seems to permeate through whatever container it is stored in. My lonely bail top jar of Penzance imparts a certain odor to the kitchen cabinet housing the "cellar".

@hunter That's the "duh" comment I was expecting. It's like expecting my cow barn not to smell like manure...
@Nate I've thought about that but I'm not sure I can pull the exorbitant prices one might expect...
Seriously, if tins are "sealed", like mylar bags mentioned by Darwin above, an odor shouldn't be expected? I'm not saying that my cellar shouldn't smell like tobacco but if the tins are sealed, what is the source?...I guess the odor would come from prior shops, warehouses, etc. as said by Phil.

You have nothing to worry about. My cellar smells of tobacco also. 5 years ago I used to worry about the same issue. The fact of the matter is 90% of the round and square euro tins if picked up and smelled, smell like the blend. I'm not sure why this is but I've never had a dried out tin that smelled before I opened it. I'm not sure why they smell but Ive never had a problem. If someone says that their tins don't have a faint tobacco smell they need to get their nose checked bc the majority do. MClelland and C&D tins of course never smell, and I believe are the best tins for cellaring.

I don't use the mylar bags to control odor because I love the smell of tobacco. I use them to insure a lack of air exchange which is what I'm looking for in long term cellaring of bulk blends. However I'm not enough of a fanatic about it to use the method on tins. I did recently bag the contents of half a dozen defective and corroding tins of Old Dark Fired.

When I only had 60-70 lbs, I didn't have an odor in the cabinets. It's only been since I have grown way past that, that I have the aromas.
@Cosmic.... And I thought I have a hopeless case of TAD... I feel better now. Got much more TAD to go through before I start worrying based on this comment :).

All my tobacco is all in mylar and then in 7 tubs with the exception of 12 quart jars I started flavoring of a bulk VA.

The room sells faintly of pipes which is fine by me.

Do you keep pipe cleaners in the same room? Any pipe cleaners I've picked up at a B&M have a strong odor (which I find rather pleasant!)
But I guess they actually smell more like smoke than leaves.

I've never smelled tobacco in my cellar. All bulks are stored in Mason jars. I noted that a member mentioned that ODF tins corroded, as it mine, I believe from the vinegar? MB uses with the tobaccos they steam-press. Their latakia flake has also been treated with vinegar, and I plan to jar both of these blends immediately if I'm not going to smoke them right away. In any case, I smoke two many blends at one time to smoke a tin reliably within a month's time, the maximum recommended time to keep tobacco in a tin that has been opened.
I'm not good with checking cellared tins for breach nor retightening the lids on jars; in fact in 14 years I've only done it once, but I've yet to pull a jar or a tin from the cellar and find the tobacco degraded. At times the closed jars in the cellar "ping" as the pressure waxes and wanes. Though I only screw the ring down tight when I jar, that is not heal-sealing or sealing with paraffin, as much force as my hands have seems to gird them sufficiently for an indeterminate number of years.
