Granted that the losses of Syrian Latakia and a number of Oriental varietals have overtaken us, I greatly regret the damnable Deeming FDA for aborting the developments of new blends based on 2 new blending ingredients: Acadian Gold fermented Virginia and the Italian dark fired. If you look at product descriptions, a goodly number of recent entrants use the later, which I understand had been used in an Italian cigar. These 2 innovations held much promise for new directions altogether in taste profiles and complexity.
The golden years for blends culminated in the explosion of new stuff last year, many inspired (if I can use that word) by the cursed FDA. Blends and companies come and go, but on my radar were the loss of Grant's, Chief Catoonah, the smoke shop in Annapolis, Compton's of Galashiel, GQ, maybe Moztek, and soon to be Pipeworks & Wilke. I am expecting the Dunhills to survive, if not in name, in kind. Already, companies on both sides of the pond have been trimming out stray blends.
Long story short: down.

The Italian dark fired tobacco is used for the Toscano's cigars - Florentine traditional cigars, quite an interesting smoke. I never knew there were projects for adapting that to pipe ...

Your mention of Acadian Gold reminded me that I have no idea what leaf they use to make the standard Perique?

Any idea?
