So I'm waiting on a delayed order from Pipes and Cigars (absolute last time I order from there...) and there's a chance it may not even reach me prior to me going on a trip. The order is a mixture of tins, pouches, and bulk. If it gets left in my metal mailbox to bake in the triple-digit Mojave Desert heat for a week or more, is there any danger of these packaged tobaccos losing flavor or moisture?

Furthermore, are there any temperature rules for longer-term storage of mason jarred tobacco?

Sorry, can't answer your Q, but I've wondered the same thing. My orders come in and they are "hot out of the oven" hot. Here it's been triple digits most of the summer and late spring this year, so I hear your concern.

As to P&C, so far I've done all my shopping with them. My last order was placed on the 9th. UPS is showing the label was created on the 9th, but not picked up yet, and an estimated delivery on the 15th. I called P&C and they said "sometimes it takes a while for UPS to show it in their system". Bull! They pick it up and it gets scanned at their local office the same day.

He said to call back on the 19th if I haven't received it by then and they would overnight a new order. This is the first time I've had a problem with them, so we shall see...

I am sure they will be effected. The question is to what degree. My only advice is to request the post office hold your mail or if you have a person you can trust have them check for it and hold it under better conditions until you get back.
And pipes and cigars keeps pissing people off too. And it's enough for me to steer clear of them. It's not like you can't get most of the stuff somewhere else with better customer service. For instance Smoking Pipes has gone above and beyond making sure things are right.

Disaster averted! Order arrived in time. Still gonna go with Smokingpipes from here on out. Their estate collection is veeeeery tempting as well...

Still curious about temperatures as they relate to cellaring, if anyone has any insight. I know to keep jars out of sunlight, but when I think of a "cellar", I think a cool place. In my neck of the woods, "cool" doesn't exist for half the year.

A week in a 100 degree oven during the day with overnight cooling? I'd think that that'd be enough to stove the tobacco. Some folks go gaga over that sort of thing.

Cool is relative. As cool as you can certainly. Room temperature is just fine. But the bigger thing is to avoid temperature fluctuations as much as possible.

I leave tobacco in ziploc bags, glass mason jars, and plastic baby food containers outside all the time here in Vegas. Moisture will condense on the container walls/lids but that's about it. I put it back inside and let it rest for a few days and it goes back to how it was. I can't taste any difference or notice any difference in the burn qualities.

Long term storage might be an issue but I wouldn't worry about the odd day here or there.

I think you’re fine with sealed tins being in hotter temperatures but pouches and tobacco that is not in an airtight container will lose moisture.

Maybe that's because every pic of you we see, you have a big ol' glass of distilled spirits in your hands and glassy eyes....

Still curious about temperatures as they relate to cellaring,

In my short 4 years of pipe smoking, my command bunker in the course of a year goes from a low of 65F to a high of 80F with humidity from 30-70%. I keep the sun very limited.

I have stuff in tins, jars and plastic bags of varying gauge and quality.

Only three times I can recall adverse impact. The dregs of a tin of 3P's got really dry, as did two cheap ziplocks with less than 10 grams each.

I appreciate this thread. I've only ordered once from P&C, and it arrived without an issue. I'm not going to roll the dice with my 100% success record--I'll stick with SP.com from here on in!

Off topic...Speaking of rolling the dice...to the at least two Vegas-residing members on this thread...do they still even have crap tables anymore? Or is it all slots and Texas Hold 'Em now?

I dry everything more than most I know so it wouldn’t hurt anything I was ready to smoke. However dry tobacco doesn’t age the same as when it’s slightly moist

Not a resident but the tables were open when I was there last month. Just have plexiglass cough shields. I felt like I was in the salad bar

Vegas is fully open.
