The worst ones seem to be the ones I use for Gawith & Hoggarth Flakes ,you may be correct as to not drying out properly as the flakes tend to be a bit on the damp side even when I smoke them.
I have checked the pipes I used for G&H Ropes like Brown Bogie ,which I dry to a crisp and they dont have such a big problem.
Your could well be correct about not drying out even though I tend to leave the pipes a while between smokes the weather this winter in Corfu Greece where I live has been very wet so that may not have helped.
I will dry the tobacco more and rest the pipe longer
