Spain - Europe
In Spain, grapes, because of our climate, produce a good amount of sugar. Therefore, adding sugar to the product is absurd, given the quality controls of the designation of origin, and even more so those of qualified origin. If you go to a town where there are vineyards, you can taste home-grown wine, or liquor, from some farmer, or in some restaurant where they offer local wine. My favorites are wine and brandy. I remember in Oviedo, a town called Colloto, where I used to have lunch in a restaurant, for work reasons. They had a home-grown orujo, similar to the herbal orujo, except that this one was made with honey. There is also creamed orujo, coffee orujo. I have a homemade white orujo at home that is 70º degrees, when my father-in-law had vineyards.

In Oz, you are allowed to make wine for your own consumption but not distilled spirits.
Thankfully there are always some who flout the law 😏
One of my best friends (Italian) at boarding school was able to procure a supply of decent (illicit) grappa from family who owned a vineyard 😋

Anyone from Italy? What’s the spirit there?

It’s pretty high on my wife’s list. If it weren’t just me, I’d go Japan and then swing down to Australia, but she hates long flights. A small bush plane tour of the Outback appeals to me. Women…
If Italy had a national cocktail, it would be a Negroni. They’re everywhere!

Me being a a non-drinker for most of my life, I just didn’t know much about alcohols till recently. We were at a cigar bar down the road for New Years a few years back, semi-classy place. I kept hearing people order martinis all around me. I should have stuck wines, which I was more knowledgeable about. But, I was feeling all James Bondish, and I ordered a martini. I hate options, don’t start asking me this or that, especially if I don’t understand the subject. So, after the barkeep kept on about, dry, dirty, lemon, etc… i was like, “just bring me a regular martini.”

I took one sip, and spit it back into the glass. I have since researched gin enough to know that, it will not be going back into my mouth ever again. Ha ha.

Not into gin. Would have to be vodka as a martini. However i prefer my vodka martinis so dry it's simply straight vodka.

Give it one more shot. Try a Tom Collins!
