As I'm a relatively new pipe smoker, my pipes have very little cake, and as far as I'm concerned the caking is simply an inevitable part of the process. All three of my pipes smoke and have smoke wonderfully since new. I'm currently breaking in a new Canadian and although I started out overly protective at first, the good lads here in these forums have pointed me in the right direction. Now I'm just smoking my pipe for enjoyment with no special worries.
I'll have to agree with cosmic on this one.
This is about smoking pleasure; smoke for today and enjoy every moment of it that you can!

UPDATE
It's only been a week since I posted this but what a difference. I listened to all of you. Made adjustments, paid attention and I have smoked near every bowl since then all the way to the bottom without any issues. I think most all of it had to do with what baccy I was smoking, how I was smoking it, and how I was packing it. Again, I appreciate everyones input so much.
This is one of the great things about internet forums in my opinion. You can get the answers you need to make decisions and choices all at your finger tips.
Cheers

Just my 2 cents...

When I switched to the swirl method of packing, I almost always get a drier smoke and smoke to the bottom, even with aros. If I get that ashy taste, I have no problem dumping.
