I"ll host a drink with them.
And even though I'm north of the border, I'll hoist a glass to them for their contributions. Don't think for a moment that others in the world don't appreciate it.

Boy did this this thread get hijacked and turned into another codger rant. People are people in all generations, good, bad, dumb, smart, industrious, lazy, educated, ignorant, logical, illogical, etc, etc. We adapt to the conditions of the age we live in. My father's generation did it, my generation did it, and following generations do it. And each generation will say that the next one is hopeless and useless, and each generation's pronouncement will be wrong.
So how about emptying the bedpans and getting back on topic?

I am not addicted to smoking on any level, therefore I am able to stop or abstain when around those who object or are unable to object (for age or whatever reason).
That being said, I love eating anchovies on my pizza and if a person around me objects (to the smell or whatever), they can go fly a kite! :nana:

I never smoked in the car or in the house around my kids. My youngest who is also 4 has some asthma like symptoms when he gets snotty. It's fairly common for children of that age and many grow out of it. We have to use a nebulizer when the symptoms occur. So I'm pretty conscious about it. I smoke outside or in the car if I'm alone. I'm hardly ever alone though so that is rare at this point. if I did smoke around my little guy and he had the asthma issues I think I would feel bad and it would give my wife ammunition to pressure me to give up my pipes. Since I keep myself in check I have had no negative conversations with her about my pipe collection or my humble cellar.

My pipe smoking may be what kept my kids alive while they were growing up, lol. But I smoke on the porch, and never smoked in the Jeep with them, at least not while the top was up. At any rate, here in Louisiana you can not smoke in the car with children either.

I understand your tribulations OP. I have a young son, aged just under 2. I used to smoke everywhere and all the time. These days, I smoke outside by myself. The boy doesn't really have a choice in whether he has to be with me, so I make the conscious decision not to smoke around him. My wife is big into vaping, and we both laid down the law together that his health comes first. When you have kids, it is my opinion that you have chosen to sacrifice your personal pleasures in order to support them. Me getting to smoke a few times a week outside and having to cease in the car isn't a hardship. It's just a reasonable accommodation.

It's still okay to have my kids break in my pipes ---- as long as we're not in the car, right??

I'm so confused

Well this is an interesting point of conversation. I'm 24, in Ohio and not aware of the laws regarding this here in the buckeye state, but speaking as a 4th generation pipe smoker.... some of my best memories are of me and my father driving around looking for our next adventure, him with pipe in mouth and the cab of his old truck filled with smoke and me enjoying the sweet smell of his cherry cavendish... I know he was smoking in the car from the day I was brought home from the hospital until the day he passed (an unrelated to smoking accident). I know I'll probably have the same practice with my children one day. As a child, I loved to watch my day with his pipes, how he packed it and light it and so on, very fond memories there... So to add my opinion, I say smoke away my friend...

No kids yet, but my wife and I have already discussed that I won't ever smoke within breathing distance of our someday-children, at least not until they're teenagers or something. I will not, however, hide my pipes or my love for them. I'll explain them like I would explain alcohol: "this is a treat for grown-ups, and when you're old enough you can decide whether or not you'd like to try it."
