I'm obviously capable of putting a tin on my lap and holding the steering wheel with my knee on straight stretches with no lights or speed changes, but that goes out the window when I need to use the clutch or turn a corner.

So who's got tips on driving stick and loading their pipe?

(Pro tip: The answer is not pulling over).

Yeah, I'm guilty of loading and driving with a manual transmission. Basically those highway straights with no cars around or at stop lights. I try to prep everything so that when the opportunity arises I can execute. Basically expert level driving needed. I recommend ready rubbed and a big enough vessel to scoop your pipe into for loading. A quick tamp and repeat.

The preloading answers are the correct answers regardless of manual or automatic transmission.

A pipe isn't worth the possible consequences of an accident.
Of course you're right.... but it's not like I'm changing a diaper or texting while driving. Honestly though, the senses work independently and experimental split attention tasks show that distracted driving is due to the fact that you can only look at one thing at a time. Listening, tasting, smelling and feeling (loading a pipe) don't constitute a distraction. There is a scenario though where it can activate vision by listening, like if you're envisioning a face while chatting on the phone, or are one of those incredible people who listens to hockey on the radio.

I used to be able to roll cigarettes with one hand whilst driving. Now I’m a little older I would pre roll/pre pack if I smoked in my car. I’d rather take 5 mins at the beginning rather than accept the risks. It’s hard to make sure you don’t injure anyone but yourself when you/if crash. I can’t imagine having to deal with something like that all for a smoke.
