I find that when it is packaged less moist, the manufacturers managed to retain flavor with a dryer tobacco. Whereas when I dry it myself, I find I can lose the flavor that is there when it's very moist but hard to keep lit.
Which gets a bit circular IMO because if the sweet spot for the manufacturer is whatever moisture level it comes from the blender with then there you are in terms of what is intended for best flavor and so forth whether more moisture or less. Doesn't mean that suits an individual.

Which has me wondering for those that are so generously topped, for example, is that something intentional/preventive for some reason related to how the tobacco is expected to be handled/used/aged, whatever?

I keep most of my pipe tobacco and cigars in my basement near my exercise equipment. Simply pull out enough for a bowl and let it dry a little on a paper plate while I work out. Serves as a good motivator to be active.

Most? - Many? Tobaccos are tinned with moisture above what the manufacturer believes to be best moisture content for smoking.

That you own druthers are very different or not, no matter; smoke 'em how you like 'em!

Some I like moist. Some I like dry. If time is your enemy, the microwave is your friend. Only seconds required and experience will teach you which blends require how many seconds.
