I bought this cheapo pipe off ebay to try and fix it. The cake build up is insane ive tried to put in some everclear and scrape but its not working too good. I also tried to sand it down but to no avail. I am also in the process of sanding down the top. I got as good as a picture as i could but my phone was having a hard time picking it up. Find a hidden part of the carpet where your wife won't notice. Rub the chamber rim on the carpet, back and forth really fast a few times. It works.
I had to tack a piece of carpet over a small section of 2x4 to use after my wife caught me cleaning my rims behind the Lazyboy. puffy
LOL! Carpet FTW!

Carpet is such a good tool in the shop. I still have cutoffs from 2 houses ago.

To start, get yourself a decent set of reamers, like the Pipnet if you can find one. You can use the different sizes to pare away the cake. Then finish with a piece of doweling with a rounded tip and wrap it with glass paper to get the remaining cake off. I do the final bit by hand, with the glass paper wrapped around my index finger so that I can carefully remove the last bit.
When I clean off a rim, I generally use spit and a rag. It does the trick for me.

Fill the pipe with wet used coffee grounds and let it sit overnight. Scrape it out in the morning with a pipe tool or dull dinner knife, and fill again if necessary. You'll get to bare wood easily, though may take a few applications. Then sand if you wish.

^^^^^ Great advice.
I reamed a couple of pipes for a mate couple of weekends ago.
Pipnet made short work of it - done in a few minutes.

Be careful using sharp knives for reaming. I see too many estates that are out of round or with nicked rims

Dremel worked brilliantly for one of mine, using a sanding bit. It was like working out a coal seam. I left enough carbon, didn't hit wood at any point, it was a gratifying success - I smoke that pipe daily. Purists will recoil in horror.

Small pocket with a sharp blade, scrap with a delicate hand until you get most of it off, and then wet paper towel with some elbow grease should rub it down to the wood.

For fine cleaning you can use bronze shotgun cleaning brushes in your drill.
I use 12ga & 16ga as they fit most of my pipes and are gentler than a reamer.
