For several years now, I've been wanting to try some coin tobacco, so I bought some today. I found a tin of Mac Baren "Roll Cake" at the Gatlin-Burlier today that had been on the shelf for several years. I've smoked flakes using the "Z" pattern fold and stuff, roll and stuff, rubbed out, cube cut and broken forms of preparation, but I've never dealt with coins. Any tips would be appreciated!

I ended up stuffing 3 or 4 of them into a Pete "303" with no problem. This stuff is very good! As a lot of you know, I'm not a Va guy, but this is very good! Of course, I'd say the fact that it's nearly 7 years old has a lot to do with that! It reminds me a lot of McC "Deep Hollow", which is by far my favorite Va.

Also, it could be because I'm smoking it out of a P-lip Peterson, but I'm not getting any Macbite what so ever!

I rub them out completely and pack tight. I've only smoked DDNR which was incredibly good. Smoked very cool and slow burning. Wish it was less expensive.

When I smoke coins, I typically take 2 or 3 (depending on bowl size), fold them up and stuff them in. I also like to fray the edges on top so when I light up, the fire has something to grab on to (surface area and all that). I'm not sure that it works any better but I always do it.

Thanks for the tips guys! These things are so small, I've just been stacking about 4 of them together and shoving them in the pipe! I'm on my third bowl of it today! I'm gonna go back tomorrow, as they have a tin of Mac B "Dark Twist Roll" which I believe is about the same age. If it is, I'm gonna snatch it up!

If you see anything that's got age on it in a B&M pick it up! Hell worst case you can trade it. I've prepared Roll Cake a few ways and found the best is in sipping it. Proper dryness in coins makes a difference, like most flake is a steam issue. Plus the difference between smoldering briquettes and goop ;)

The Rollcake comes out of the tin at a pretty much ready to moisture, so that's helps.
If you're not a virginia guy, this is maybe a good place to start, as there is burley and cavendish (yes, Cav can be virginia) as well.

I enjoy Rollcake - I get an almost lemon drop like taste from it.

I will either fold and stuff coins like Escudo or cube cut them. Since they are round discs the cubes are not very square, I just make sure the chunks I cut off are good size so I get a nice slow burn.

Hi,
I do it similar to Per Georg Jensen showed on one of the videos floating around here: I take 2 coins, put them above each other and roll them into a cylinder. Instead of putting it right into the pipe, I twist and press it, to make the tobacco roll uniform. Then I push this into the pipe.
Kind regards,

Peter

I am not sure if I do it right but I fold, twist, and then stuff. Two coins normally give me a nice hour long smoke.

I usually roll and stuff, or stack and stuff. The last couple of times I've gotten PH Curly Cut the coins have been about dime sized and fit easily in a neat stack. Whichever method I use, I usually rub one out fully to put on top to make lighting easier.
Glad you got to visit with Richard a little petes03, he's a fine gentleman.

Thanks again guys!
@lochinvar, I've been talking to Richard, Ira and the rest of the guys that work at the Burlier at least once a year, for a good ten or so years. You're right, they're all great guys! Richard is who I've talked the most with, he's a real character! We had a good bowl together on Saturday, I sampled some of their stuff and gave Richard some of my H&H Mazatec to try. He also gave me a two-bowl sample of the Lane LEO he was smoking, which I've still yet to try. They're a little pricey, but I love going to the Burlier every year, if for nothing else just to hang out with some great guys for a while!

I forgot to mention, I've only been smoking a pipe for about six of those ten years. Before that, I greatly enjoyed their house blended chewing tobaccos, and the occasional cigar!
