Whatever works for you. I’ll dry the tobacco to a moisture level that I know works and then I just pack, light, and smoke. Some blends burn more readily than others.
On many occasions I’ve put the lit pipe in a coat pocket when I go into a store to pick up a few things, pay for them, pull the pipe from the coat pocket when exiting and continue to enjoy the bowl without relighting.
It can be hell on pockets if I haven’t balanced the pipe in my pocket.

Based on the excellent advice from several seasoned members, I find my relighng is less. I load the bowl the light. After a few puffs, I tamp. This usually results in a slow burn with little smoke, the way I prefer.

I am also experiencing laying the pipe down for a few seconds and find when picked up, I can get a little smoke.

For years I dried my tobacco on a Neerup leather tobacco mat before starting with my smoking session. I have recently discovered the microwave for drying my tobacco (10 seconds will suffice). Damn epic that microwave! I sometimes have trouble with keeping the tobacco lit as well, but that's part of the ritual. Sometimes you have a great bowl, and sometimes you don't. It's not rocket science. And definitely don't over think it all. In the end, it's just a pipe...

Keep on puffin'
