I'm not sure how it happened, but somehow while new to smoking Haddo's stamped itself onto my nascent pipers brain as a member of the "must try" pantheon of blends. It remains the only one I've not tried. I've had it in my cart nearly every time I've placed an order (there's one well supplied pipe shop in my state, quite far away), yet I always bump it for something else. Several times for other Pease blends.
Part of my issue has been folks often mention fresh and harsh in the same sentence when describing the blend. But 15 years ago, all Haddo's was fresh Haddo's. Did those old dogs find it harsh? Hmm. Well, I took a look at asp and found a great review from Tinsky, a self described "wimp".
Well after sitting and staring at my monitor another 10 minutes, after

posting. I boldly strode into the shop , grabbed a tanblast short

canadian. OPened the tin, trying not to breathe too much of the

strong fumes, and as carefully as I could packed the bowl in small

pinches.
Well in my nervousness, I must have pinched too hard as the draw was a

little tite, a pipe cleaner didnt help, so I rammed a paper clip and

jiggled it and the pipe drew normally.
My fingers were shaking so the first match i lit went out !

The second barely singed the pungent tobacco before it went out. The

third, as always is in stories, did the trick and blue- grey plumes

of smoke wafted into the rafters. Burns nice, I thought to myself ,and

no strong taste either, (as I had been clenching my taste buds)
I gradually started to allow them to work and I was greeted by a mild

smooth & tasty blend. I thought to myself, you can do this.
SOon after awhile, I stopped thinking about what I was smoking and

just enjoyed it! I decided to dedicate the pipe Skip Elliott gave me

for its use only. As i intend to keep trying on a regular basis. What a

nice blend ! Thanx for all the support , now I can be a member of the

Haddo s Club, and hold my head high ....
Charming thread. See here:

Haddo's IS a delight! I've not found it harsh in the least. It's full flavored compared to other VaPers, but that flavor is more fruit laden than hay, grass, or pepper. If you like Perique and haven't tried Haddo's, you're in for a treat. An excellent candidate for cellaring, it ages extremely well.

I love the stuff. I have yet to have any experience with a tobacco that transmogrifies with age quite as much as Haddos does. If you smoke and aged version, and then a fresh version, you would swear they are two different blends.

Oliver Haddo, The Great Wild Caricature of Aleister Crowley makes an appearance in name only. This blend is awesome, I didn't have any issue's with the tobacco being overly harsh when fresh. That being said, I am aging a tin as I type, I'm sure that the aged tin will be better. If you've tried Barbary Coast, then you are ready for Haddo's Delight. To me they share some similarities. Don't bump that one again, go ahead and get it! If you like perique, this rummy concoction will deliver.

I smoked a seven year old tin of it last year, and enjoyed it. Way out of my wheelhouse, but good enough to get me looking for older tins.

Thanks Gents. An LB is en route. They go through the hassle of making it available in such large tins I thought it rude not to avail myself.

An LB? Larry Baer? Linus Balling? Little Brats? :) It took me several moments before I thought of a pound. That is what you meant?

If they fit little brats in large tins I have a couple ready for canning.

Yes, I meant lb as in libra pondo, i.e. an avoirdupois pound.
