I have several tins of blends that I have never tried, that I just can't force myself to open. I've laid them out, fondled them repeatedly, but just ended up putting them back into the cellar area and telling myself "It'll happen". Am I alone in this manic action?

I only have one I'm not sure if/when I'll open. It's a Murray's era Dunhill Nightcap.
The blend is not that big of a deal, I like Nightcap but not one of my favs, but I know it has some collectors value given the age and rarity. Tempting to use as trade bait for something hard to find.

Oh God no, you're not alone. I break my tins into divisions, tins I'll open anytime, tins I won't open until I have a damned good reason. They are about 50/50.

I have the opposite problem. Unless its something that I already own, I have to force myself to NOT open a tin until I'm ready to smoke it.

You are not alone. I have several tins i would like to open and try but I keep telling myself, be patient, it will only get better with age.

@ Dale: so you smoke 19 bowls per day, but won't open certain tins? o.O May I ask why not?
Here's a little tale. When I was a young child, I got the coolest Halloween candy: a candy, real-sized tarantula! It was too awesome to open; it was too cool to eat. Eventually, it got moldy and I threw it out. What a waste. Things are just things and the whole purpose is to enjoy them. Rip open every tin you have been saving, enjoy a good smoke and savour it, and don't look back. That is a lesson for all things in life.

I don't smoke 19 bowls a day every day... That was a 1-time thing... I average less than that. I have mixed feelings on the tins. Some, I want to smoke but that means they'll be gone. Others are destined for "other things". I have plenty already opened and in bulks to keep my pipes bellowing smoke for awhile still before I'm forced to break seals.

Sounds like the world I live in. I buy a tobacco I want to try, then put it on the shelf until I have finished what I have open. Next thing I know, there is something else I wanna try. I have some tins from 2009 that I haven't tried yet. That's how those rare aged tins get created, I'll wager.

I used to have a bad habt of opening numerous tins but now I'm really trying to focus on only opening something once I've finished off something else. Currently I only have about 5 tins open, the rest of what I smoke regularly is coming out of bulk stuff I keep jarred.
I also took the time to inventory all my blends and build a spreadsheet to track exactly what I have on hand... and of course what I need to buy more of. Currently I'm only sitting at 52 sealed tins. I could probably use a few more

I find it hard to open my tins now, wIth all the haters out there the price is only going up, when I want or need more I go to my local B&M. I'm also regularly ordering more for the cellar, as cash allows.

Tobacco I like and purchase in a large tin I open as needed. I like to buy five tin samplers, usually 50 gram size. Since they haven't been tried before when I open one of those I intend to smoke it all as I feel it is the only way to porperly evaluate it. Usually this takes at least two different pipes over a period of two days and perhaps try it while having a cup of coffee, or beer, or wine on the side just to find out whether I really like what I bought. When I first started to do this there were some nasty disappointing experiences but over time I can tell by the description provided by the blender whether it is worth the effort to sample. For many who cellar for quality rather then stocking up, they are the ones who have to resist the urge to open a tin because the time required for the tin to mellow/age/meld varies so much and that is all a subject of differing opinion in the pipe smoking community.

I crack a tin of something new as soon as I get it to see what its like. If I like it it goes in a jar if I dont it gets sent to someone who will or traded, but most of the time I just send them out where I know they will be appreciated. I just bought a tin of xmas cheer '06 from a guy selling some stuff at pipe club, smells glorious, have'nt smoked any yet but will very soon and I see a jar in the near future.

You should see me when I am trying to decide what tin to open next. It starts off with one or two good options, then a couple of more look good, then I see one that has some age on it, then I get in a mood for Latakia, but then an aro sounds good, but I don't smoke VAs too often, and suddenly a week has passed, work is threatening to fire me, bills are overdue, and I am a huddled heap on the floor adorned with a ZZ Top beard and tins strewn about like a hurricane swept through my cellar as I lay in the fetal position gasping for air through my sobs as I ask myself, "Why do I torture myself so?"
