Somebody help me think this through : What if a US pipe smoker sold & shipped the OP a couple of pounds of tobacco ?

1. He wouldn't be breaking any US law , would he ?

2. Would Canadian Customs be able to detect it
You have to fill out a custom form. You can legally mark it as a gift. You have to state what you are shipping and value i.e. tobacco. I'm not sure of the taxes on a gift.

It's outrageous that we are forced to become criminals just for a smoke. I have been warned by customs that my next indiscretion will result in a heavy fine, jail or both........let that sink in. So promptly gave them the middle finger and have been coming up with another work around that just might work so I can get some tobacco through.
Man, Paul, I had no idea you were having to deal with this kind of crap.

Don't sweat it Mark, you're only defeated if you give up, I haven't and as special forces guys always say "you're never out of the fight". The thing they don't understand is we have a solid group of enthusiasts around the globe who will help if its ever needed and this opens up opportunities that the customs guys haven't even thought about yet.

A big 👋 to Mr Customs Man that is reading this, I won't stop😛 and if you're wondering YES this forum has been infiltrated by Customs for sure!

Man.. I just can't even. I hope you find a way, brother. That is just crazy. And it really only screws the middle and lower income folks, especially older folks on fixed incomes.

Rich people will just eat the costs.

Neat.
Yeah if the punishment for breaking a law is a fine, it is a law that only exists for those without the means to pay.

Or would the tobacco automatically get confiscated, the recipient be threatened by fines and imprisonment?

Don’t like someone in Canada? Just keep mailing them pipe tobacco until they go to jail…..
Just make sure the 4$ a pouch stuff on pipes and cigars. Or claim it as a pound of penzance

Of all the comments, expressing concern or opinion on the subject of the government’s actions over the choices of its citizens/subjects, only @georged’s grasps the true gravity of the situation.
The rest are lamenting inconveniences.

Regulation that carries force of law is inherently legislation without representation, ie tyranny.
And the sad part is the the collective “we” allow it, because for the most part we are law abiding folk.

It’ll be too far gone before the majority even know what they’ve lost.

Drug dealers smuggle in tons of illegal narcotics daily. I'm comfortable I could figure out a way to take a weekend vacation to the States every six months and return with 10 lbs of pipe tobacco in the spare tire.
I can see it now, as your in your 10th year of a 30year sentence you can impress the young pinks by being el bandito of pipe tobacco.

Try calling it indigenous medicinal treatments or religious paraphernalia

Indeed.

And when tobacco is gone, something else will be targeted.

Incrementally, in every country everywhere.

The root problem is that a percentage of humanity wants to be in charge, cannot stand not being in charge, feel they absolutely must be in charge, and never---ever---stop trying to be in charge.

The mechanisms don't matter, the pretext doesn't matter, the science or logic or common sense or anything else doesn't matter... The only non-variable in the equation is EXPRESSING CONTROL. Being in charge.

Those who are OK with having their lives controlled by such creatures are invariably recruited to assist in tightening the screws on those who aren't.

It has always been this way. Humans don't change, only the technology they use does.

The 21st century catch is there's no where left for the fed-up to go. Putting your stuff on a ship and sailing over the horizon, or piling it into a wagon and heading West is no longer possible.

Quite the opposite, in fact. Today's digital world makes escape essentially impossible, and the tracking of dissenters easy.

Seizure of tobacco coming into Oz is becoming more commonplace as Oz Customs become more efficient at detecting tobacco shipments.

And no, we cannot redeem our shipment by paying the exhorbitant duty. All consficated tobacco is destroyed

I recently paid AUD$800 for a 250gm tray of SG Full Virginia Plug, buying from one of the very few local vendors.
If I had to pay that, I'd reluctantly stop smoking.

I fear it’s coming our way as well at some point
No kidding. Here in Washington state the tax is already exorbitant. I stocked up HARD a couple years ago while the getting was still good online... Today I stopped in a local B&M and just to support them, i bot one tin of Capstan Blue for $44USD after tax. Not doing any more of that and likely going to be clamped down any day now. I empathize with our brothers in Canada, Hawaii, NZ and Aussieland, and not sure what I'm thinking yet re the poor souls in UK. This persecution really spins my dials to TILT.
