I am being serious when I say that anyone who sells estate pipes, needs to say in plain English if said pipe has had lakeland tobacco smoked in it. I have never had to worry about this issue for the almost 20 years I have been buying estate pipes. But the last 8 estate pipes I have purchased have been ruined by lakeland ghosts and even after numerous ozone treatments they remain ghosted.
There has been a proliferation of people who are now smoking lakelands and that is fine. They love the stuff and I am happy for them. But it ruins pipes and people have the right to know.

As someone who is looking to try Lakelands, what is it that makes the ghost so stubborn?
Sounds like one needs to dedicate a pipe strictly to that blend type...

Agreed, but sometimes a cherry or a fruity aromatic can destroy a pipe also. It's just as hard to get those smells out of a pipe. And, I am dreading one day getting one that was used exclusively for Grape Captain Black. Hey, if you like the stuff, great, but just tell us if we are going to have to soak the thing in gasoline before we can enjoy the pipe.

You should just list them for sale on ebay as follows, and price them at double what you paid:
Verified authentic, ozone tested, Lakelands initiated estate pipe. Rare. Exclusive.

Excellent idea, cigr'. Or it could be a category: Ghost history: Lakelands, heavy cherry blends. Something like that. It might not sell the pipe faster, but it would gain cred with the estate buying public. Some of the old mail order catalogs, back when that was the equivalent of amazon, gained huge following because they described in detail precisely what they were selling, even the less desirable features. People trusted those retailers with their money.

It sounds crazy but there may be market for it. For one, I'd consider it. I have one "Condor" pipe. Generally, I only smoke Condor in it (and it's the only briar used for Lakelands but there are clays and cobs for those too) but every once in a while, I'll throw a straight virginia in it and it's sublime as a result.

The reason why so many Lakeland tainted pipes hit the estate market is because they continually get recycled back. Everyone hates them, no one smokes them so they get sold again.

I don't think most estate sellers smoke the pipes they sell, and it's next to impossible to know what tobacco was smoked in them unless the prior owner discloses it them (even then it's not standard for this type of information to ever be disclosed in a listing, at least I've not seen it). With that said, I'm currently dealing with a Lakeland ghost and do agree that it would be nice if there was a way to know if the estate you're buying is going to smoke clean and free of residual flavors. I just think it's a risk we take when we buy estates unless estate sellers smoke the pipes they sell prior to selling them, and then disclose that the pipe has a particular ghost. It could be a strategy to adopt for someone in estates or looking to get into selling estates. It could increase a sellers integrity, and in the long run grow a trusting base of buyers.

Harris,
Your suggestion rocks. I had this happen to me with an estate and it was so deeply embedded. If I had known there was a soapy floral ghost, I would never have bought it. Now I buy only estates from sellers like Briar Blues who will tell me whether there is any scent or not. I think your idea if implemented would serve to increase buyer confidence. TW

I always found it helpful that Briar Blues often lists the type of tobacco smoked in a particular pipe for sale.
A heavy latakia ghost is just as dreadful to me, but they tend to get exorcised with less effort.

An ethical seller should disclose any obvious aromatic aromas in a pipe.
What's the most expensive pipe you ever bought that was strongly ghosted? I paid about $80 each for a couple Savinelli millennium pipes, but never in anything over $250.
When it has happened, my solution had been to embrace the scent and dedicate them to aromatic or Lakeland tobaccos.

The same goes for Latakia blends.
In any case, I always ask before I buy a pipe.
BTW, I welcome Lakeland Ghosted pipes.
The most expensive pipe I ever bought that was horribly ghosted was about $250. The original seller must have smoked Ten Russians in it several times. Heavy Latakia scent.

I have a number of 200.00 plus pipes that are ghosted and will eventualy unload them. I will be giving them to an estate dealer who will take the time to get rid of the ghosts as I am not subjecting some poor schmuck to the same issues I had to deal with.
One idea I did have was to smoke Cult Blood Red Moon through one to see if that could over power a Lakeland ghost. I would much rather taste cherry than lakeland. I really do believe that people need to disclaim Lakeland and Latakia ghosts when selling pipes.

Throw a couple my way. It was a ghosted pipe that taught me to like Lakeland styles. Once I realized what the stink was I tried to smoke it out with about half a pound (literally) of Edgeworth Slices. Didn't work. Did teach me to love the flavor.

I keep dedicated lakeland pipes.
