Well, as promised, the first issue arrived in the mailbox today. It is a quality layout in print medium. The pipe and tobacco content was a bit light and superficial but it seems the publisher may be trying to appeal to a younger generation of new pipe smokers with articles like “Pipe Smoking A Counter Culture.” The several vintage black and white photographs gave the magazine a cafe literary book club kind of vibe.

I’ll continue to subscribe. A future article with photos about one of the remaining classic brick and mortars in the US (see B&M thread on this site for suggestions) would be a great way to preserve that information for posterity and likely be a good read for younger and older subscribers alike. I think an hour on the phone or at a pipe show with someone like Jay Furman would help recruit quality contributors.

Well done, Mr. Dean!

I recieved my copy today.
I haven't looked through it yet.
I plan on reading it tonight....if I can stay awake. It was very hot snd humid here today. I spent hours in the fields filling in gopher holes.

Appreciate the feedback Mike! I will definitely keep that in mind & try to include and make sure some of the pipe content stands out and is more forward.

I definitely love the idea of exploring remaining B&Ms, and have reached out to some folks about doing pipe shows and hope to include a write up about the recent Capitaland Pipe Show in the next issue.

Again, thanks for your support & giving me a chance!

I think this is great! I hope you succeed. Promoting the hobby with an old fashioned printed magazine is a great idea and I wish you all the best!

I received my issue weeks ago. It is of very high quality. Most articles are contributed stories. He’s been asking for stories from you weathered (experienced and newer to the hobby) folks as well as more ideas and content for future issues. I for one appreciate holding an actual magazine in my hands that reading on a screen. A lot of criticism here for someone trying to keep things traditional while all of us here are brought together by the definition of a traditional hobby. Keep up the great work timber and smoke! I can’t wait for the next issue and am very much looking forward to it.

Its kind of odd to me that so many here are knocking this guy's venture before knowing what's going on.
I personally love reading or listening to stories about pipe smoking, from pipe smokers. He said the magazine is stories and tales written by various pipe smokers, and probably some other content.
Instead of embracing the guys idea and seeing where it goes, some here are just "i dont like this".
The dudes just trying to show his love of the hobby in a way to share with others. Dang, give the guy a chance. :)
Every year our clinic does several free spay/neuter days, several free vaccination days, and several free vet care days.
Every event there will be at least one...usually more people who just complain.
"You should start earlier", "you should run later", " you should have a pick up/drop off service", "you should do MORE", "the incision is too big", "why aren't the follow up meds free?".......
I just smile and thank them for their advice. These people do not bother me, im doing it for the beasts, not the humans. I work all year to pay for these free services. Im not complaining, I love doing it and it does make a difference...for the animals, I dont care so much for most of the people.
But if I were doing a service for humans who were just negative, It might dissuade me from trying.
Just saying. :)
I understand the point you are trying to make but there are some things you and the person making the "magazine", do not grasp fully.

Why am I the potential customer, going to pay money for a magazine that the content of is either a copy and paste of self agrandizment I can already find for free online?

Why, in easier mathematical terms, am I the consumer, going to 13$ plus tax and shipping, to get a printed diatribe of content that I do NOT view online for free?

Its a "just because you put a photo of yourself on instagram, doesnt make you a model".

Its like "gun stores", its really easy to find a 50 year old guy in 2015 claiming to be a sniper that served in Korea or Vietnam then it is to find a 50 year old guy in a gun store in 2015 who will admit, he has no clue about anything.

So don’t. If he does well, great. If he doesn’t, so be it. This doesn’t have to be polarizing or dramatic.

Wow, a 5-paragraph diatribe (your term) about why you don’t want to buy a $10 magazine that promotes the pipe hobby. Glad you explained your position in “mathematical terms.” By the way, most 50 year old guys I’ve met in gun shops in fact know a heckuva a lot about firearms, and I’m glad I learned a few things listening to them rather than writing them off as “clueless.”

Lol, are you one of the crowd that thinks every 20 year old 300 pound kid with an army logo shirt is a current Seal or Green Beret because they say so?
