Thumb Shake.

There is no right answer. Everyone is different I really enjoy shaking the bowl and smoking the last little bit. I love the flavor. I do sometimes get ash through the pipe. Not a big deal to me but , I can see as others may not like as much. The end of the bowl to me is my favorite . Opinions will vary for sure.

Well, recently someone posted in some thread a quote from a Sherlock Holmes story describing the fellow saving all his dottles and then filling a full bowl with them and smoking that. ?

Most of the time, I just push the edges down with the tamper and smoke to the bottom with a fine ash. I've seen the thumb method described employed by other smokers, just not something I've done or am likely to do.

What hoosier says. If the ash is loose I just flick it out if outdoors. If inside, gentle tamp and keep going.

For pipe smoking.

Digging through fire debris and ash is what I do for living. Definitely don’t need to do it for my pipes.

One of the reasons I gave up Latakia blends. If I want to smell smoke from a structure fire, I’ll go to work.

Huh, I just smoke it till its ash. Never felt the need to shake it up. I rarely have dottle anymore.

rarely. well stir up the dottle and repack it. Works when it's pretty dry otherwise forget it.

I too have smoked to the bottom for the cake, and gave up. I don't think have smoked one to the dottle since. I am unable to taste anything when it gets low, maybe there is something I doing differently. I tend to smoke just for the flavor and aroma.

Umm, no but I'll give it a try just for the sake of it. I usually smoke pretty much to the bottom anyway.

I half agree with that. I think life's way too long and a burnt tongue only makes it longer.

Could actually make life shorter by steaming one's tongue.
