It was stupid-cheap when I got into it, undervalued I’d say. I wasn’t going broke cellar-building. My cellar was built because of the recognized value. Nowadays I’m not so sure I’d go so hard, and just let the cards fall where they may.
This is exactly how I was with guns and ammo too... and I only turned 18 fifteen years ago so it was even after most of the best deals were already gone. Yet I still was able to get things at least 2-3x cheaper than they've become in the last 5 years.
In general over the last decade I've been spending heavily on physical assets and commodities with the theory that they were severely undervalued given the cheapening of our currency and so far I haven't been proven wrong lol.

I think many in this community can see these things easier than the average population too. Idk if piping attracts them or flips normies' switch, but either way... it's harder to stomach someone on a TV telling you inflation is going down when you're familiar with hard commodities. And when someone sees their Virginia flake having doubled since covid and not come down, not to mention having increased steadily by a buck or 2 per pound nearly every year prior... because our hobby *is* a commodity we're just more attuned to the bricks and mortar of economic reality...

Haha, very poetic 👏
For me it was my Grandpa's Middleton Cherry but thanks to the forces that be, after it's discontinuation, I lucked into purchasing the last 34 pouches P&C found in the corner of their warehouses.. delivered to me on the anniversary of what would have been his 90th birthday. A sign from above imo, so thanks to his guiding hand I'm blessed to say the same :)
I smoked Middleton's cherry 40 years ago . Then stopped pipe smoking .

Been looking for it , didn't know it was gone . Very sad .:(

I know, I'm sorry my friend :( That's kinda how I felt taking a few year hiatus then coming back to find McClelland gone and FM going for $100 a tin lol... though not nearly as much experience as you in the hobby.

Though idk if you saw my other post but they do still sell the cigarillos which contain the same tobacco with that same distinct top note. Just search for "Middleton's Cherry Cigars" and you'll find them. Stripping them down to fill a bowl is def not as cheap, but it will give you that priceless trip back in time again :)

Ha. Funny. I'm just getting started in this PT journey and one of the first things I did was look for the Middleton Cherry Pipe Tobacco. I remember how good those cigarillos smelled and thought to myself that i should get THAT pipe tobacco. It would be a good start I thought. That's when I discovered it was long gone.

Google searched for a similar cherry blend. Read a thread somewhere (probably here) where this option was suggested. So after buying a box of the cherry and a box of the original wood tip, I deconstructed half a box of each (25), and put the PT in mason jars. (2.5 ounces each jar.) Nice room note, but I will have to revisit to know if it was worth it to me. Thanks for the tip!

No problem brother! And yeah, unfortunately I've yet to ever find a suitable match blend.. at least all the ones I've tried have been fine but none get that signature flavor right... I've actually read that Middleton's had it developed special, it used no standard cherry artificial flavorings. So yes, def not the cheapest but the most authentic. Enjoy :)

What are your plans?
My plans are to keep chugging along as I have been. Pipe tobacco is still readily available to me, and I'll just accumulate a few blends at a time as I figure out what I like. The blends I really dig I may stash a little bit more of. There's so much to choose from I'll never get through everything available anyway. As a newer pipe smoker of just over a year now I'm just starting learn which genres I'm into, never mind favorite blends. I suppose if things went really sideways, I could always sack away a few bags of the cheap stuff as I still find pleasure in smoking less complex blends. Of all the things I'm actually concerned about though, availability of pipe tobacco is pretty low on the list.

And for anyone who doesn't you can still buy the cigars which is nice, it is still the same tobacco. I love them for when I'm out and about esp. in the woods, but I'm also a dirty pleb who enjoys Black & Mild Original Wood Tips too, so... 😂
But even if you have something against the wrapper you can still field strip them and fill a bowl... not as cost effective but still an option.
Black & Milds are great for when you want a quick smoke

The good an bad of gaining experience is that you develop favorites. That said, one also develops appreciation for other flavors. This leads me to the conclusion that I would be bummed to not have access to my favorites but Im ok if it happens becuase I can find something else I like. Its not like I can manage to try them all.

For now there are many blends to discover. So the easy answer is to stock up on my favs and slowly try others. Its a sheild against time and also fun.

Guys. Guys. You're raising the dust un necessarily.
We are talking about millions of dollar business, are we?! Show me company that invested such amount of money in the business and let it to die. Scandinavian is the same. May be cuts in blends that are not so good sellers. But in general the show will go on.
Second : weed is prohibited isn't it?! And still you can buy it on every single corner.
Relax and enjoy your pipe.😉

I agree and will just continue sampling as I have over the past year. Smoke what you enjoy and hope it's around for at least as long as you like it. Nothing wrong in stocking up on what you enjoy either, but I suspect if something I like goes away I'll be able find a suitable replacement. I have seen a report that the pipe tobacco industry as a whole is growing so that may be a good sign.

Weed is actually legal where I live, but with some restrictions of course. Oddly enough though, there is a "ban" on flavored tobacco so go figure....

I get my bulks at Cigar Daddies, so far I've only ever gotten tins at Cargo Hold but next time I might check out the bulks. However most likely I'll be buying the stuff STG axed that I want to try.

You could also stop in at Smokey Joe's in Fife. The cigar lounge there is home to the Seattle Pipe Club, and they carry a selection of SPC blends. That's a much shorter trip than driving up to Poulsbo.

I too live in WA State, but I'm still able to order online from select vendors at a good price point. As I live in in south west WA just across the river from Portland, I can head over there to a number of different pipe/cigar shops as well. The one I frequent has a pretty solid tobacco selection, so that's nice. My brother also lives in Oregon, so if there is something I want from a vendor that won't ship to WA, I'll have it shipped to my brothers house. I haven't done that in a few years though.

I also have a decent size cellar. At the rate that I smoke, I currently have enough tobacco to last me probably 15 years if I don't buy anymore. I'm not one to hoard a bunch of my favorite blends, but I do buy a tin or two from time to time. If one of my favorites disappears I don't stress over it, I just move on to other blends and enjoy what I have.

82nd Ave Tobacco and Pipe is my go to shop when I go to Portland. They have a solid selection at good prices. Much better than the prices at Rich's Cigar Store. Rich's is too expensive, and the last time I was there, their customer service was terrible. I was treated like a criminal, and they acted like they were put out when I was trying to engage in conversation and ask questions. I won't be going back anytime soon. There are several other shops in the area that have a good selection at better prices. Cascade Cigar and Tobacco has a good selection and prices too. If you find yourself in the Portland Metro area.

Yeah Smokey Joe's is definitely on my B&M bucket list, I've heard they even carry a few exclusive SPC blends you can't get elsewhere. I'm just never in that area for anything. I've never been to Poulsbo just to go to Cargo Hold. I don't recall if I mentioned of this thread but I can't drive so that puts a damper on things. Overall I'm not super concerned with having a big cellar because I don't smoke very often right now, I'm more concerned with getting to try different things while I can.

Have you been to any of the B&Ms in Seattle like Tobacco Patch? I haven't been to Seattle since I took up pipes but I'll be going this spring.

Have you been to House of Calabash? From what I understand that's run by a former blender at Rich's who had a falling out with them. He has a pretty decent selection of house blends

Smokey Joe’s is great. SPC meets there on the second Wednesday of the month, if I remember right. They also have a nice, staffed, walk in humidor with a good selection of cigars.

I have a deep enough cellar to be supplied for the rest of my life if I completely stopped buying right now.
I have become interested in experimenting with blending and had planned to order a bit of a wide variety of component leaf. With the situation now I plan to acquire at least a pound (or more if possible) of each variety.

I would eventually like to try growing some tobacco as well.

Google lists House of Calabash as “permanently closed,” and their website (as linked on a facebook page that hasn’t been updated since 2019) mentions that their blender Steve Book had died and his daughter was now (or at least then) had taken over blending duties.

But the real shock was perusing the prices on the few house blends that were listed. The cheapest was $58 for 4oz. of a burley-based codger house blend. Plus shipping.

That’s what I would call a “WTF?!?!” price. I wouldn’t pay that for Esoterica, and certainly not for a codger blend.

I've only visited their page briefly a long time ago. Charging that much for straight burley certainly isn't a good business practice so no shock they aren't open anymore. You could 8 oz of a revered one from LJ Peretti for less than that.

This could take an interesting turn.
