I am not a sitter. I am constantly doing stuff, which drives my wife crazy. I do not have a dedicated chair, if I do sit down, sometimes I prefer the floor to play with the dogs while watching a show. I will set down for a movie or a series sometimes, but I end up walking a round, getting stuff, or maybe just standing next to wherever my wife is sitting and just watching while also checking my phone or conversing with you guys.

I really enjoy sitting in chairs talking to other people sitting in chairs. The human race is fascinated with chairs. We call leaders chairs, they chair comittees. We attach motors and horses to chairs calling them chariots, cars and carriages. We even execute prisoners and have them sit in a chair or lie on a bed which is really just a horizontal chair. We makes rules about using chairs, when to push them in, when to pull them out. We help others into their chairs as grand romantic gestures. We even interrogate suspects and put them in a chair with a light over them so they can see the chair. So of course a smoking chair just comes naturally to us. The amazing chair.
Long live the Chair!

Nice post.

Before we moved into our current house a couple of years ago, we did some extensive renovations. I work from home, so the smallest bedroom became my office. I knew I also wanted a whole house fan for the warm but not hit months, so instead of putting it in the obvious spot in the ceiling of the second floor hallway, I put it in the office ceiling. When I smoke, I close the door and HVAC vent, crack the window several inches and turn the house fan on. The room gets a bit cold or hot, depending on the season, but moderated by the house air being pulled under the door. If I put a sweatshirt on, I can do this very comfortably even if the outdoor temp is 25 degrees. Given that the air being blown into the attic is primarily outside air and it’s more than adequately ventilated anyway, I doubt there’s any measurable cooling/heating of the attic.

And no, I don’t do this to placate my wife; I just don’t want a smoky house. If I leave the fan on for a few minutes after I’m done, there’s no lingering smell. The room is very small, so it heats up/cools down quickly when I open the door and HVAC vent.

Most of my smoking is done in chairs. There's the cheap, but durable office swivel that I use at the computer in my home office, the leather recliner next to my wife's chair in the living room where I have a bowl every evening and, for a change, there's a leather wing back recliner I got from a local reseller. That is kept in what I grandly call the "media room" with a large bookcase and a curved screen TV mounted on the wall. There's also a couple of spare pipe racks along with a reclining love seat in there for when my wife and I want a movie night.

Back in late 80s when I was attending NCSU, they had what looked like chair in the picture. Most comfortable chair I have ever used. They were well worn, and just felt perfect. Looking through the our library pictures, it seems they have gotten rid of them and replaced with new office chairs that would break if you make out with a girl little too heavily.

This is the chair I smoke in. I'm always reading a book and smoking a churchwarden. It isn't much, but it's more comfortable than it looks after I throw some scrap cardboard on it, it's got a nice back so I can sit up in it, and I've got a cup holder on the arm to hold just enough whiskey and mountain dew to keep my tongue wet. It's easy to drag around to whatever side of the house the wind isn't blowing, and it's been sitting outside for 40 or 50 years, so it doesn't require any care at all.

A Smokers Bow Chair at my desk and the same again but with a Windsor Hoop Back next to the stove.
A smokers bow chair because its what my grandfather a pipe smoker sat on next to the fire all the years that i knew him and because the armrest height is exactly right to be able to rest an elbow on while smoking a pipe.

I had to google that term, "Smokers Bow Chair" as I wasn't familiar with it. When I saw examples I was surprised as we have a couple of those here and I never new the name. I learned something new!! ;)

Picture me as the future pipe smoker... sitting in a chair with a VR headset on, waving my arms around like a ninny with a pipe clenched firmly between my teeth.

the wife wanted me to toss out the old chair. There was no way I could let it go. It's my chair, and I will own it until it falls apart and is no longer functional as a chair.
What is it that makes wives and girlfriends want to compulsively throw out old but awesome things? I almost broke up with my girlfriend years ago when she threw out a bunch of clothing I had owned for a long time because it had to thrown out (too many holes). Yes this included some of my first shirts for bands I adored. Like it doesn't even matter if I can wear them.
Sorry but what the hell makes them like that?

Smokers Bow Chairs are commonly becoming known as Captains Chairs in the UK and some countries of Europe because of anti smoking sensibilities. It‘s doubtful that a Captain ever sat on one of these chairs unless it was in a pub between voyages as because of their all fitted and glued strength, no nails or screws used and reasonable comfort they were popular in public houses, the comfort comes in the scalloping of the seat which is shaped to take the human form making what is a two inch thick lump of hard wood comfortable to sit on without cushions. Their popularity wasn’t confined to pubs with the more refined and better finished models being sold to households, Charles Dickens used a Smokers Bow Chair at his writing desk and occasionally a U shaped stretcher can be found on a chair, the stretcher is what holds the chair legs in position so that they don’t flay apart under the weight of a person. The U shape stretchers were introduced so that 19th Century Ladies of a class that didn’t frequent pubs could sit down in their parachute sized crinoline dresses tucking the dress under the chair to free up living space while maintaining their modesty.

Yes, now I have heard them referred to as "Captains Chairs."

My lair. My wife doesn’t want pipe smoke upstairs, so this is my basement where I am still king!View attachment 362694View attachment 362695View attachment 362696
I've seen homes like this, but never lived in one. So clean and clutter free. It's beautiful, but it would make me crazy. I need piles of magazines and newspapers, boxes of project parts in the corners, maybe a 50# bag of bird seed. And a wood stove. But a recliner would be exceptional. Maybe if I got rid of some of the boxes and piles, I might have room for one.

Used chairs: Anything used and upholstered makes me nauseous. I just keep thinking about how many people had farted into it!
