A pipe buddy offered me a deluxe with p-lip for a decent price. Haven't used or even seen one in person before. I get the impression the system would have a tendency to mute the taste of the tobacco to a degree. Have you folks found this to be the case? Does the p-lip ever lead to burning the roof of your mouth if you are a normal puffer?
Is the lip comfortable?

I haven't tried one, but I did just read a nice article on them:
http://www.tobaccopipes.com/blog/understanding-the-peterson-plip-mouthpiece/
Hope that helps.

Just be careful, if you tip the pipe all of the collected water and goo gets dumped right int the bowl. A good idea, but impracticable, IMO. Also, I hate p-lips. I prefer to clench and just forget about the pipe while doing something else. But, with the p-lip it focuses the smoke on the roof of my mouth so that it gives me the equivalent to hot cheese pizza burns on the roof of my mouth. So, I just don't do Peterson's at all anymore.

I have one p-lip and doubt I would get another. You need to have the pipe further in your mouth than a fishtail. I have never tried a system pipe so cannot comment on them.

I have one. The p-lip is good for a change, especially if your tongue needs a break.
The system part is an expansion chamber and I've never accumulated enough liquid that it can pour out or back into the bowl. its like a mini calabash. Xtra surface area of exposed briar. I do clean it after each bowl which is a little xtra work.

I haven't owned a system pipe, but from posts it seems like they are useful to smokers who struggle with moisture. I don't, so this wouldn't help me, but some find them preferable. I own one P-Lip, a nice Peterson Rhodesian. I enjoy smoking it, but I wouldn't buy another P-Lip. I feel the fishtail (usual pipe bit) focuses the smoke better and delivers better flavor, and I don't find the P-Lip has much bearing on tongue bite. Also, with the P-Lip, I feel I have to stick the stem further into my mouth, which is fine but a little distracting. With a fishtail bit, I just don't think about it, and feel I have more control. It's individual; some want mostly P-Lips. I think fishtails are universally preferred since P-Lips are sometimes offered at a slightly lower price, which means (I surmise) they don't sell as fast.

I own several Petes, 3 of which are systems, in fact I only own 2 pipes that aren't Petes...you could easily/correctly say Peterson is my favorite brand. Only one is fishtail. I much prefer plip, don't have an issue with "needing to get more of the bit in my mouth" it has a button similar to a FT with a little extra to allow the smoke to be directed up. I WILL ONLY buy petersons in the future, well with the exception of a birth year dress dunhill, eventually.

The delux system is the highest quality, they're a damn fine pipe.

I only have one deluxe system pipe, and I can safely say that it's the best out of all Peterson's system pipes. The p-lip for deluxe differs from those used for standard or premier system in that it is not rounded or thick, and rather it is quite flat, so very comfortable to clench. I don't know exactly what you meant by "mute the taste", but I haven't noticed anything wrong with my tobacco taste.

I'm with you. I've become a p-lip afficianado after years of saying that I didn't care for them. My key is the vulcanite stem.
I have a Deluxe 11S with 1979 hallmark (my year of HS graduation). I love this pipe. After smoking multiple pipes, I always reach for a p-lip to avoid any tongue issues. I'm a dry smoker and never noticed any moisture issues at all with this lone system pipe in my collection. Some of my older Pete's are "semi-system style pipes and they all smoke great (all of those are Pre-Republic pipes).

That's interesting Shawn. I read somewhere that there are differences in the quality of materials for stems between the lines but details are hard to find at Peterson. As far as muting the taste is concerned, if I point the stem of a fish tail away from my tongue and toward the roof of my mouth I taste less of the tobacco.
Edit: Al, I missed your post somehow the first time I read this. Your post on the "green forum" was what I referred to above.

Hmm... I certainly haven't noticed much issue with taste, surely the smoke will be in contact with your tongue one way or another; plus if the smoke had been hitting your tongue directly for too long, you won't be able to taste much afterwards anyway, so I wouldn't worry about that.
