Unusual for sure. Held and smoked right it would be a good System Pipe trapping moisture uh? Lightning bolt sink trap, hehe
Looks to be molded plastic of some kind, hole was in the mold?

Isn't bakelite a resinous material? In other words couldn't it poison you if it got hot enough?

Edgreen: What is that about bakelite being poisonous? I have a pipe with a bakelite stem. Is it unsafe to smoke?

You would have to set the bakelite on fire concentrate the smoke and inhale. Bakelite doesn't off gas, You're safe. Still used by some pipe carvers today.

That's not the one I'd grab at the end of the day for a fine bowl of Pegasus or something, but I'll give

it high points for creativity. I suspect the draw would be a little restricted, and a stray fleck of leaf

at one of those switchbacks could really cause a fuss. But it's all worth it to dazzle and annoy the

pipe club or pipe show attendees. It a conversation piece for sure.

Yeah those are Bakelite, I've seen them come up for sale on ebay before. Definitely a conversation piece. Wouldn't be hard to keep clean if you have a retort.
