Oh, my, I had completely forgotten that I addressed this subject before. Thanks for the reminder!

I've found a variance, depending on what tobacco I'm using.
I definitely enjoy the last of the Black Frigate the most, as it seems the rum makes a nice encore near the end.
Burleys and Virginias mostly burn nicely until the last little bit.
MSO, I'm finding another one I enjoy the end of most to be the Gawith, Hoggarth & Co's North Star, which is just VA and Burley. The beginning is rough to me, as the VA bites and the Burley seems a bit sour. After the half way point, they seem to get more "in sync" with each other.
My technique is still developing and possibly suspect. I have been conscientiously working to ease up. Also, previous drying may have been inadequate but I've focused on that, as well, and this shag seems to dry nicely.
I've gotten this result with both a wider and narrower pipe. I'm beginning to suspect that I just don't like all of the VA's as much. All of my woes, so far, have been VA based.
Others have told me that VA's require the most care and to consider tossing them into the cellar for a later time.
Definitely an interesting learning experience for me.

When I reach the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the bowl, I tap any ash out, stir the dottle, and relight. I find this is more flavorful than the first 1/3 of the bowl, in a pleasant way. It's like the blend tastes in the beginning, only moreso.
