I have a 100 g tin of Mac Baren's Navy Mixture with about 5 years on it, and I just can't bring myself to open it for the same fear.
On the other hand, I'm currently puffing my way through a pouch of Mac Baren Cube Silver and I LOVE it! No bite whatsoever, just delicious tasting pipe tobacco.
Due to the varied opinion in this thread - I'm stil on the fence about opening it. Then again, I have the same fear of opening a tin of Sunset Breeze by Peterson that sits on the shelf. I suppose at some point I'll have to crack the Navy Mixture because I believe it won't improve with age as aros are usually better to be smoked fresh.

The only way I can smoke it is by cutting in into cubes, and letting it get on the dry side.

Mac Baren tobaccos make up a big part of my rotation/cellar. For the most part, I have no fear of getting bit by them.

I've never smoked Navy Mixture, but I do smoke Navy Flake. It can be a little tricky at times, but go SLOW and you shouldn't have any major issues.

All in all, I love my Mac B's, and find that slow "sipping" them yields lots of flavor and little to no bite.
Here are the Mac B's in my current rotation/cellar:
HH Old Dark Fired

HH Highland Blend

HH Latakia Flake

HH Vintage Syrian

HH Acadian Perique

Vanilla Cream Flake

Virginia Flake

Navy Flake

Mixture Flake

Roll Cake

Dark Twist

Plumcake

Latakia Blend

Burley London Blend

Virginia #1 (have not yet smoked)

Golden Blend (have not yet smoked)

7 Seas Black (have not yet smoked)

I've also had Bronze Cube (and liked it) but it's not currently in my rotation/cellar.
I also smoke and cellar other brands produced by Mac Baren, such as Capstan and 3 Nuns, and have no problems with them either.
Give a few more Mac B's a try, you'll probably find some you like!

Not a fan of Navy blends but MacBaren's HH Latakia Flake and Vintage Syrian are top notch.

MacBarens products seems to hold the number one slot in tongue bite complaints.Their reputation as a biting brand, voiced by many active forum members over the years, apparently hasn't hampered their business. I wonder if they've investigated the cause or care.
