Nope, the scale is zeroed, actually I even remove the batteries to redo it because I usually use it to weigh out whole coffee beans prior to grinding them for espresso. I also weighed known weighted pipes to ensure accuracy and they were spot on, this really feels literally like you aren't holding anything but smokes like nobody's business. Cheers.

Here is what I weighed with two known pipe weights, the Talberts, and the other two the Orlik and Altinok/Davorin collaboration Calabash.
Orlik Prince .40oz.!
Talbert Goblin 1.7 ozs
Talbert Morta Calabash, Masur Birch cap, accent and Meerschaum body 1.85 ozs
The Altinok-Davorin Calabash Meerschaum bowl Morta body 4.8 ozs

I have a minute six sided Radica pipe and it weighs in at 12.5 grams / .441 oz. It is so small I can barely get the tip of my index finger in the bowl...and I have small fingers. 9.7 grams is an exceedingly light pipe.
