This Old Pipe !

So this is my daily smoker. It has no name but it a well made pipe. I think I paid $60 for it. It needs a cleanup real bad and I plan to start tonight. Can anyone tell by the pics if this is a vulcanite stem? How do I get the crud off? I would assume sand paper? Also, what’s the best way to clean the outside of the bowl with out sanding it?

The picture didn't get posted. To tell if the stem is Vulcanite, it is often recommended that you polish the stem really hard to see if it gives off a slight rubber smell. Vulcanite is a little softer than acrylic or lucite, so clenching it is a little harder against the teeth, which is another way to tell.

Yes. For all the navel gazing and anal introspection done at pipe forums, it’s really great to see a guy say “hey, here’s my pipe, how do I clean it?”
Very refreshing, and a stark reminder to most of us that one pipe and some tobacco is all that’s needed.

And I apologize for not answering your question. I’m not big on cleaning pipes. Someone will chime in with some tips, or point you to a sub forum with answers.

Yeah you totally need to get the rest of that stem oxidised so it matches the general aesthetic. Maybe remove it from shank and suck on it while driving.

How do I get the crud off?

An easy way is to scrub it with a magic eraser and polish it with Flitz metal polish.

Yeah you totally need to get the rest of that stem oxidised so it matches the general aesthetic. Maybe remove it from shank and suck on it while driving.

Exposing it to steam would do it instantaneously.?
