I'd say it's a waste of good briar.
My guess is that it wasn't really that good of briar which is why the rustication is so heavy. I'm also guessing that this pipe was made purely for the novelty pipe collector, and not actually intended to smoke. If it was really good briar then I imagine they would have made a couple pipes from that block.

A conversation piece they might sell to someone who wants a conversation piece and has that money. Meantime I bet they sell a lot of standard size pipes after attracting attention with this one.
