My aunt and uncle never locked their house. They would go to florida on vacation for a week and leave the entire place open and I mean front door not even closed if it was summer. That's not the world we live in now though. My doors are locked whether I'm home or not. My car door gets locked whether I'm in it or not.

Last Saturday I lost the keys to my house, garage, my mother's house, and in them there is a relic blessed by the late Pope Juan Pablo II. My wife went to her parents' house for three days, a thousand kilometers away, she took a cheap flight, it was her parents' birthday, in addition to their 55th wedding anniversary. I had a very stressful weekend. All the keychain is kept in a small leather keychain bag. On Monday my friend sent me a message on WhatsApp, and said: Damn idiot, your fucking keys appeared in my car, between the seat and the gear shift. We were having a few beers, and the funniest thing is that I only drank non-alcoholic beer. I hate losing keys, my mother was about to change her locks. When they appeared, my mother and I celebrated together at McDonald.

For almost 30 years I've had my keys on a chain that hooks on my belt.

I also prefer to shit at home, before a shower, when I'm not wearing said chain.

In the eighties and nineties, here in Spain there was a fashion of carrying keys and money wallets attached to trousers. I remember seeing my father get off the truck and being left almost in his underwear, after getting caught in that chain. His trousers were torn. But I still like that fashion, even though I don't use them.

Don't lose your only car key! If you still have the other one, it's relatively cheap to make a copy, using the one you have as a master. If you lose the only one, the procedure is much more complicated and has to go through the car manufacturer. It involves making sure that you are really the owner, etc.
(can you still say "master key" in today's times?)
Not the case for an electronic key unless I'm not misunderstanding something. There's no key to cut.

It is the case for "smart" key - if you still have one more original key, you can even program a copy yourself if you have the tool (a scanner that can program smart keys). However, if you've lost the only key, you can't make a copy yourself, and you have to go through a dealership which I believe has to go to the manufacturer in this case.

How many people have scanners and how much does a scanner cost? And of course, there would be cost associated with the hardware and electronics.

A proper professional scanner, like SnapOn, could cost a few thousand. A Chinese clone could be had for a couple hundred bucks.
But this is not the point - the point is that losing the only car key is a much bigger PITA than losing one of the two keys.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

In sight of the Humansville Christian Church just a block north of the annex, is what is now known as Murphy’s Bar, but many years ago only as the Humansville Tavern. It has been in continuous operation since the Leaky Roof Railroad came to town in 1885.

As Superintendent of the Chosen and Elected Elders my father was responsible for everything whatsoever that happened in the church, and he’d send me out right before the Sunday Schools opened to the annex to check on the condition of the cot and the food supply in the kitchen, and make sure to shut off the outside light, if not already flipped off, or doused down as it was quaintly termed.

There was not one lock or key anyplace in that church, and each night that light burned in sight of that beer joint. I was told that had always been so, and would forever be.

I’d usually find it empty, with a few dollars perhaps in a collection cup, the cot neatly made, and I’d inventory the refrigerator and make sure the refrigerator was well stocked, and the rest room clean.

But sometimes I’d find a patron of the beer joint, and if so I was taught to make coffee, from the can in the freezer, and offer pastries, which were kept in the bottom compartment, and put them in the toaster.

And having provided him coffee and a hot breakfast, leave him to face the morning, and use the rest room.

Sing one, Johnny Cash!

When I tell that story I’ve been asked, weren’t you afraid of those drunks?

My response is I was afraid one of those drunks, might be the Master.:)

And it taught me the best place to spend Saturday night, is home with my family.

Il accept your opinion as I've fortunately not had to replace. Last car and present were/are electronic keys. Hoping I don't lose one and go through either solution.
