So why cellar? Well, aging of some tobaccos is beneficial and I don't plan to keep them for eons, but rather to smoke them. Also, by putting stuff away I've been able to have a nice stash of what I enjoy without dealing with tax increases, price increases, shortages, production bans, eventual internet sales bans, or maniacal buying by frenzied hoarders. I just go to a bin and get what I want. Aging is the frosting on the cake.
+1 to this.

Thanks Jay. I've already had two sessions in the tunnel, so I know what to expect now. The annoying thing is that now after 6 months they are sending me for scans to check out what was my original theory, which the GP promptly disregarded with a patronising smirk. On the bright side, I've had all manner of cancers and other ailments ruled out, and know that there are various parts of my anatomy in fine working order despite 25 years as a smoker, and subjecting myself to all manner of other noxious substances and physical strains due to work and other pursuits. Hopefully this time they'll find something useful.
Toobfreak, point taken and duly noted. As mentioned before, I only used these jars as they were what I already had in. The bonus is that as each tin fills two jars, each jar will be opened half as often.

RE Air and aging..... I believe in the theory that oxygen impedes aging, thus packing it as tight as you can serves well. There's still plenty of oxygen in the tobacco, unless you're creating a heavy cake or plug. If it's short term, why bother; just make it convenient for yourself.

Honestly, this is what I'd normally do anyway. I was only considering this little exercise for "educational purposes". Maybe I'll "archive" a tin at a later date when I've more funds available.

I dont know my main motivation for my cellar is the hedge against inflation. Ie I buy what I can while I can afford it. aging is just a nice side effect.

"aging is just a nice side effect."
That mirrors my thinking exactly. I don't cellar to age, that is just a bonus for me, I stock up regularly as I know that the time when the ban on internet sales of tobacco here in the UK (at least) is creeping up upon us. When it comes I cannot say but I just like to keep slightly ahead of the game.
Imagine, no B&M shops (which HM Government are already working on) and no internet baccy...just a rack of lovely pipes gathering dust :crying:
Regards,
Jay.
