Surely you haven't tried that successfully. First, it's not drying dottle. Second, it's well prepped tobacco just waiting to be re-ignited. Some call it delayed gratification technique. For me, it just happens when I put down a partially smoked bowl. (Happens a lot, as when I go out the door I usually load a new bowl to go)

It doesn't work for me. You still have ash on top of what's left. Trying to reignite that isn't the same as fresh tobacco.
Even when I smoked cigars, letting one sit for a few hours and trying to relight, just isn't the same same fresh taste.

You'll certainly have to deal with relights in the beginning.
As for the choice of tobacco, I'd also suggest to skip aros, and to try to discover what you like in the Virginia/English blends departments.
Will you save money in the end? Maybe...
